I saw the new poll here about being ready for 3-D. So I thought I would start a thread about what it takes to be able to play some of the new 3D content that is coming out, like the Hannah Montana movie. Do you need a Digital Cinema projector, what kind of screen? I know I would like to find out more about whats needed to break into this market.

Come on! Is that for real? I'm not talking about IMAX 3D here.

It was the price he quoted---not IMAX--actually IMAX equipment I believe is much more expensive and I do not believe any digital at this time??

looks like there is a 3D movie this summer too.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Trailer looks like it is pretty standard popcorn fun with dinos and things.

what did that $250K buy you? any specifics?

because yikes!

hey wimovieman, are you going to the NATO meeting in Minneapolis this year? or Lake Geneva? or neither?

I dont know if anyone else received a letter from Disney about 3D but I did and I busted a gut at this sentence in the first paragraph, and I quote...

"no projector or server can be DCI-compliant until it passes the Compliance Test, and no such DCI-Compliant equipment is yet commercially available"

I think that sums up the state of the industry in a nutshell when it comes to Digital.

It then goes on to list equipment that can be used in the interim.

While I can’t disclose the amount we are paying for digital projection and 3D I can assure you I am not paying $250,000 for each of the six that we have installed.

You need a silver screen, digital projector, server and sound upgrade to Dolby 790.

Leeler--I haven't received any info on a Lake Geneva convention this year--but then since reel news was taken over by box office--I haven't received any publications. Thought members were suppose to receive boxoffice as part of fee.

To answer your question, I rarely miss Lake Geneva.

Santicos---I doubt any theatre that is getting 3D now is paying anything for the projectors--but my theatres are no where near a market that has the population for a third party install.

Free...While not $250,000 not free either, but so far well worth what we spent.

the lake geneva info can be found here: http://www.genevaconvention.com/

it looks expen$ive for what you get so I was gonna look at the NC NATO convention in Minneapolis instead. no website or agenda yet that I can find but it is lots cheaper.

Just having digital projection doesn't ensure that you can play digital 3D but of course with out you are certainly out of luck for digital 3D.

I have been watching and reading about the digital systems for some time. I use to own theaters and was interested in getting digital projection but was out of the business before that aspect could be brought to us. I now work for a small outfit that has little to no interest in the digital cinema at all. No amount of talking, arguing or urging has made any difference in their indifference. My belief is that in 4 to 7 years we will see an end to film or at least it will be a lot less and certainly border line theaters will not have much of a chance when the cost of film goes up.

The 3D aspect is one that may or may not greatly enhance the digital. If it becomes the standard and the only way you will get the feature in 3D then it will be a driving factor.
