I was wondering if there are any stats that say what percentage of the American public patronise movie theatres?

The NATO Encyclopedia of Exhibition, published each year, has this info and more.

You can get one from NATO, but it cost a lot.
But larger libraries might have it as well.

According to the MPAA:
Total public age 12 & over:
26% never go!
28% once a month or more
35% once in 2-6 months
11% less than once in 6 months

Burney:

Did you ever try the idea of having free showings of trailers to attract people to have lunch at your theatre?

I've often thought that theatres in areas of high traffic (like a mall or small town main street) could get people into a theatre-going spirit by offering "free" screenings of upcoming attractions for "walk-ins" during off-hours.

No, John. I didn't try it. I have suspended my lunch special until summer. I might think about that trailer idea again then.
