I've discovered some mighty fine theater construction articles in old back issues of ARCHITECURAL RECORD magazine particularly in the years 1938, 1940, 1944, and 1946. There's an excellent article in the June 1944 issue on pages 83 through 102 called "The Theater For Motion Pictures" which cover quite a bit of design basics and is well worth checking out. If you have a large library near you, they may have these on microfilm or if you're very lucky they might even have the actual real paper issues.
