I was wondering what everybody charges for the pop/popcorn. What sizes are your pop/popcorn, how much are they, and what is your refill policy?

Popcorn:
Small (32 oz) $1.25
Medium (85 oz) $2.25
Large (130 oz) $3.00

Pop:
Small (16 oz) $1.00
Medium (24 oz) $1.50
Large (32 oz) $2.00

No free refills

We sell lots of both popcorn and pop. We added the Odells real butter and bumped up the price of our Small and Medium a quarter each to compensate for the added cost and have been selling large popcorns by the boatload ever since. Who woulda thunk it?

This question was asked several years ago some where in here, and it's good to see an update. However, our prices have not changed sine 1996. I said last year I was getting ready to increase my concession prices, but I still have not.

Therefore they continue to be:

Small Pop Corn (24oz) $1.50
Medium Pop Corn (46 oz) $2.00
Large Pop Corn (85oz) $2.50

Small Drink (14oz) $1.25
Medium Drink (20oz) $1.50
Large Drink (240z) $1.75
Bottled water $1.00

Candy: $1.00, $1.25, $1.50

okay, now i'm confused.

i have read that the reason concessions are so expensive is that little income is actually realized from ticket sales.

yet, the prices listed here are much less than the theaters i visit (nearest one 40 minutes away).

why do your prices seem reasonable (even cheap) and the others are not?

I'd say because most of us are
1) independent and not sharing profits with a major corporation,
2) not paying a multi-million or billion dollar mortgage or an obscenely high lease rate on an 10-24 multiplex facility, and
3) our facilities are managed and staffed more efficiently.

Just my opinion here, but I think if concessions are priced more reasonably, the customer will actually buy more--as long as they don't have to wait in a long line.

When I go into a multi-plex I will buy a popcorn and soda if there are only 1-2 people in line. If there are more, I skip the purchase entirely. If even 20% of the customers have a similar pattern, you have lost 20% of sales and need to make up for it somehow, so concession prices are raised to compensate.

It would seem wiser to have more minimum wage concession staff working during peak periods to increase sales--two bags of popcorn per hour would pay their salary.

my reason for lower concession prices is that my tickets are lower as well. I can't very well charge $3.50 for a ticket and $4.50 for popcorn. Anyway, my wife and I scratched our heads alot and came up with this model after doing some rather extensive census studies and examining our competition and decided we needed to be a reasonably priced alternative to the chain that is 30 minutes drive from here. They get movies many weeks before we do but if they're willing to wait it'll probably work its' way down to us and you can have a night out for half the price and concessions will be about half price too!

I can prove what Burney says. The people I bought the theatre from had a concession company who charged very high prices.

My prices were lowered right away.

The per-cap is higher than theirs was, on most nights. And we get a lot of good PR for lowering the prices.. very worth it!

I think Sals hit upon what's important here. It's not so much what's charged for concessions as much as what the "per cap" is. And that'll vary according to what type of show. A Family show usually generates the most, followed by Popcorn movies, and then Adult fare. For me, the worst are Art House films, as everyone seems to want to go out to dinner either before or after the show.

I can tell you that after a month with the same pricing, if I'm off by as little as 2 cents on the per cap for that particular show, I'm on the floor watching staff, cause something's not right. Either the customer or the till is getting short changed.

Now that popcorn kernels, oil, electricity, soda, and everything else has gone up, I was wondering what everyone's concession prices are currently. I raised my popcorn price today and the below prices indicate the increase.

Popcorn: (in bags)
sm. 46 oz: 3.00
med. 85 oz: 3.75
lg. 130 oz. 4.50 with free refill

Soda:
child 12 oz. 1.50
sm. 16 oz. 2.00
med. 32 oz. 2.50
lg. 44 oz. 3.00 with free refill

Bottled Water $2.00

Candy: .25, .50, 1.50 & 2.25 & 2.75

I ordered one case of Indiana Jones 170 oz. plastic buckets today and have not decided how much to charge for them yet. They cost me 95 cents each.
