Was thinking of going over the Canola oil in my popcorn. Then someone whose antenea brings in more stations than mine told me that Canola oil is much better for you when it is unheated. But, as soon as it gets cooked, it's just as fatty and bad as tpoipical oils. Anyone else hear this?

What were you using originally?

The best I've figured out is that coco is the worst but tastes the best and all the rest are so-so.

I guess I wonder is coconut oil on your corn as bad as one Big Mac and Large Fries?

Or a bagel with cream cheese every day?

Back when the news media made such a big deal about how bad Coconut oil was, we changed to Canola oil despite the fact that the popcorn just did not taste as good and used it successfully for a couple of years, then I don't know if the recipe changed or what, but suddenly, the whole theater starting smelling like old fish when we popped and the popcorn had a fishy taste. So we changed back to coconut oil. IMHO, it can't be that bad, unless you eat major amounts every day, but then I'm no health expert. Anyway, we have had no complants about our popcorn.

Thanks for your thoughts. I am using and will stick to ye ol' coconut oil. I've heard horror stories about canola and that it vaporizes at a lower temp and thus becomes airborn and sticks to walls and the like. Besides, like it says on my web sight: "Worry about your fat intake at home. When you come to the movies, you're here not to worry about life."

When it comes to fat, MODERATION is the key. Popcorn popped in coconut oil once a month is certainly no worse than a big burger and fries or a few slices of pizza. As I said, at home I watch the fat intake, especially of saturated fat. But during a night out at the movies, I indulge (my conscience still leaves the topping off ).

The only topping we have is Nutritional Yeast (which is different from brewer's yeast, but the terms are interchangable for the tourists). We never had much call for topping, and since i seem to be fitting into the XXXL shirt Mike sent me, I guess that's a good thing. I gave up diet pop, perservitives, fake sugar, red meat, and roughing-up drunken frat boys -- but, you have to be super human to pass up freshly popped popcorn . . . .

We use some kind of chemical poweder concoction that sits on the counter for "salt and vinegar", real powdered cheddar cheese topping, and nute yeast. Some people actually take the top off and dump half the jar of yeast on their corn!

I've been covered in massage oil more than a few times. Does that count as high cal?

We use coconut oil and real butter in both of our theatres. Although we only started our business this May, we already have a great reputation as having the best popcorn in the county. Many people come in just to buy the corn or a slush puppie.
