Another holiday season of releases is around the corner! In today's age of digital media it is all too easy to forget the basic and essential telephone link to customers.

One of the easiest ways to lose a customer to a competitor is a busy signal, the second easiest is with long messages that lose the attention and focus of a caller.

Some tips to help make the most of your telephone solution:

1. Keep messages concise. 50-55 secs for single screen, 70-75 secs for multiplexes. If a typical caller can not get adequate showtime information in these times, sales are abandoned.

2. Verify the lines you are paying for are working. On multi-line equipment, make sure all lines are answering correctly. Often times a line or equipment problem on a "roll-over" line goes unnoticed until a chance discovery or a patron complains. Unfortunately most patrons won't mention this problem.

3. Make sure you have enough lines/coverage. With the rare exception of small single screens, a single line is rarely sufficient. Here's a general guide:
01 - 04 screens xx screens divided by 1.5 (screens per line)
06 - 10 screens xx screens divided by 2.0 (screens per line)
11 - 20 screens xx screens divided by 2.5 (screens per line)

4. Make sure your office and patron use of phones doesn't tie up your inbound capacity.

5. Nearly everyone has a cell phone, far fewer access to a web browser or mobile web. Consider where your patrons are when advertising. If you are advertising in or on something your patrons use or have in their home, the web is great! If you are advertising on the radio, it is far more important to include your phone number than a web address as most people listening to a radio are in their car. Similarily, if you are advertising on a menu or sign include your showtime number. Most likely there is a cell phone in the pocket of the person seeing your ad whereas a web address relies much more on recall at a later time.
