I'm just curious... what trade rags do you folks subscribe to? Which do you find most helpful? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I'm a Boxoffice subscriber and have read the mag since the 40s. I think it the best.

Film Journal International is also very pertinent to theatre owners, as is the NATO publication "In Focus".

BOB <> Boxoffice sure AIN'T what it used to be!... Like you, I subscribed from the early '60s until a couple of years ago... It was weekly and cost $4 year ($10, 3 years) when I started, and was an absolute necessity for anyone in the biz!... It had technical stuff, great ads, reader input, industry chit chat, guest contributors from a wide spectrum, distributor input, current & scheduled release charts, BO performance figures, pre-release & day and date reviews, and NEWS!... It was a FANTASTIC magazine THEN, and I really MISS it!... I watched it deteriorate, after Ben Shylen departed, into a once-a-month rag that cost $50 year, and became little more than an organ for the studios (and their video wings), big chains, and the MPAA & NATO... Today it's just about as worthwhile as YESTERDAY'S newspaper: everything is stale and too far removed to be of any use to the small independent, little or no practical technical stuff, just gloss and no depth!... Film Journal never was on par with Boxoffice, but was a decent mag then; I haven't seen one in several years... Premiere is a fairly decent source for distributor news, upcoming releases, and reviews... No exhibitor news, but it's overall a lot better than Boxoffice, at a fraction of the cost... This site and Film-Tech are the best things to come along since Boxoffice soured, and along with Premiere, should fill the bill for most concerned... Like I said, I sure miss Boxoffice as it USED to be!... Rant completed :-{

I've been subscribing to BOXOFFICE magazine for 25 years. I like it, but it has definitely gone downhill over the past several years. I remember some of the great technical stuff they used to have. I think it was around 1980 they published a neat technical article entitled "Build Your Own Exciter Lamp Power Supply".

RIGHT ON, KEN <> Yes, that was an excellent article on building exciter lamp supplies, and typical of the great stuff that they USED to print... I built several supplies based on that article, and they are all still in use...

HELLO BECK <> Premiere is a consumer oriented (movie & video buffs) magazine that is a newstand item... Most newstands and other magazine sellers seem to sell it... Premiere also has a web site: Premiere.com, which features the magazine, and also offers subscriptions (which are very inexpensive for new subscribers)... They offer a lot of chit-chat, industry insider info, reviews, previews, and stuff from the ticket buyer's perspective... Most of it is just as useful for independent exhibitors...
