TOPIC: Capacity

Capacity 21 Jun 2003 07:57 #24013

On average for those of you that run 5 showtimes a day what percent of capacity do you think you are at for each round of shows.

example showtimes 11a 1p 4p 7p 9p

10% 20% 20%....etc.

this is an average over a year so blockbuster 80% get averaged in with 10% dog times.

OK, I took a look at April for these numbers.

Things you should know. We are a 5-plex Art House in Santa Rosa California. Our audience is older than your average audience. They tend to be retired so they can come in the afternoon. April 2003 was an extraordinarily busy month for us. We had two prints of A Mighty Wind, Bend it like Beckham and at the end of the month we had Nowhere in Africa. The times were difficult to quantify due to the fact that we had Movies in the Morning 4-days per week. We had 5 show times of A Mighty Wind and only 3 show times for Nowhere in Africa.

Our capacity is 829.

For the month of April:

Shows at 11:00 AM ran 8.22% of Capacity.
Shows at 1:00 PM = 33.25% of Capacity.
Shows at 3:00 PM = 14.62% of Capacity.
Shows at 5:00 PM = 15.50% of Capacity.
Shows at 7:00 PM = 37.86% of Capacity.
Shows at 9:00 PM = 9.48% of Capacity.

If you add in the morning movies we ran 19.82% for the month of April and without the morning movies we ran 24% of capacity. Not bad!

As you can see from the numbers, we have to be open at 1:00 PM as it is 30% of our daily business. Even though the 9:00 PM shows are only 8% of our total business, it's not something we wish to throw away. Even the morning movies add 7% to our total business.

Our busiest days are (in order) : Saturday, Sunday (matinees and early evening shows are very popular around here on Sundays), Friday. Mon - Thursday are pretty much even, with Tuesday being the normal 'big' weekday.

Our busiest days are Fri. Sat. and Monday(Mon. only during the offseason where we have a discount night).

Tues-Thurs are fairly slow and Sunday is a bit busier than the weekdays.

I think the industry average capacity is 20-30%.

Sunday 19.93%
Friday 17.92%
Tuesday 11.15%
Thursday 9.91%
Monday 8.72%
Wednesday 8.21%

I used the past 6-weeks of data.
