I'm thinking about opening a first run 6 screen movie theater in san jose, california. i'm hesitant because of cost expenses. I'm currently developing a business plan to try to get funding; however, i would like to know any of the following information:
-what are average total revenues in san jose for 6 screens?
-what are the annual costs of opening and running an six screen theater?
-average film exhibition costs
-concession costs
-theater operating expense

how profitable would it be? 6 digit income or 7 digit income?

Thank you for your help!

Would you still be interested in building this 6 screen if we told you that you would probably only get to keep $40,000 - $60,000 and you might have to work 60 - 80 hours per week yourself including all holidays - Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving included?

If you are still interested after considering how this would fit into your life, we have an assignment for you. Please read all that we have previously written in all forums. I recommend starting in The Back Office because it is pretty meaty and you can finish reading everything in a couple of days. Then read everything under The Concession Stand, The Booth and finally The Lobby. I would save the Lobby for last only because it will take you quite a while to read everything. In order to access all topics, you will need to change the box in the top left of each forum to read "Show All Topics". It currently is set to show only the topics for the past 20 days. We are happy to answer specific questions that you might have after digesting all that we have already written. Sorry, but we won't be able to write your business plan for you. There are no short cuts since the information is quite specific to the individual situation. Good luck.

If that, San Jose is already highly competitive, Century will get all of the blockbusters, there are already plans for a local company to refurbish an AMC 8 and reopen as 1st run, Camera has Art Houses, not to mention lots of screens in Santa Clara, Milipitas, etc.

If you have a 6 plex that is free and clear of competition, 1st run with no one else within 20 miles or so you might turn a 6 figure income over time, depends on how much you spend building it. Location, Location, Location.....

Welcome to the theatre industry.

Curious, the 60k to 70k take home. How does this change if you only have a 2 plex? Are the added screens worth the investment and headache?

It all depends on how many screens your market will support. If you have 2 screens and could support six your missing the opportunity and most likely someone will see the opportunity and come along and build a multi-plex down the street.

A single twin can be profitable if you work it yourself, do most of the maintanence, etc. Long hours, no holidays off, 6 and 7 day weeks, and you won't get rich.
