Re: "70 mm as gimmick" I am not worthy. I am not worthy. What I meant was "standard". I don't get around much but I have never seen a 70mm in operation. The hundred or so theatres I've been allowed into the inner boothdom have all had one thing in common: 35MM projectors clicking along.

When I hear someone say he/she has a digital projector in a theatre and that they are running it, I wonder a few things. 1. who paid for it? 2. how do you get product for it? 3. what do you do if you can't get a film in digi? My impresssion was that there was not one digi projector sold straight up yet and that they were all purely in a test run situation at this point. .

The various digital cinema vendors have admitted to heavily subsidizing most of the digital systems currently installed.

John, would you hazard a guess when we'll see something that is affordable, workable, and supported by distribution and exhibition? And that will be useable in smaller markets? And how will my 401 do this year? But I'm serious. I think John has the best ability to predict this. What do you say?

AFAIC, the Kodak Digital Cinema System offers both superior image quality and lower cost than competing digital systems. The Kodak Digital Operating System is very user friendly, and will have the reliability and experience of IBM supporting the server technology.

IMHO, you won't see widescale support from distribution and exhibition until the SMPTE DC28 standards are finalized, and the sharing of costs (NATO and Newco Committee) is worked out. It's likely to take MANY years before digital screens outnumber film screens.
