Just wondering as a fledgling concession jock. How long did it take for those of you who started out like me to get into the projection booth?

I worked my way through college as a projectionist. The local drive-in theatre was owned by a high school friend's father. He knew that I was interested and had skills in photography (Photography Editor of high school yearbook) and electronics (science fair projects). Once when we were car-pooling to school, he asked if I would be interested in working as a projectionist at his Dad's theatre. I said "sure", and the rest is history.

Bottom line: let your theatre's management know of your interest, and be able to demonstrate some aptitude to learn the technology and maintain superior presentation quality and a good work ethic. Learn all you can from resources like BigScreenBiz and Film-Tech on the INTERNET, and from publications like those from Kodak:

If your theatre has union projectionists, approach the local business agent with your qualifications and desire to join and learn.

WE hired a guy for the booth first. He had a good attitude as well as aptitude and asked for more work so we moved him into concession and tickets. He gets all the work he wants because he does everything well and cheerfully. You can move all ways.

I actually walked right into being the booth Mgr with no booth experience. (OK so it does help to have a background in film production and it doesn't hurt that your dad was a projrctionist at one time either)OK I lied I had some experience with the machines

Does anyone have old projection booth training tapes that I can have a copy of or manuals.
I would like to have these on hand to train new workers and also get current ones knowledge of the correct way to do things in the booth. About platters, threading build up and down and booth operations all around!
