Here is a link to a 10-minute Max Fleisher cartoon, showing how the variable density optical sound system, invented by Western Electric, worked:

Finding His Voice
Western Electric Company, Inc.
10 min 39 sec - 1929

Actually, a very instructive film that was shown to early audiences when "talkies" were introduced.

Enjoy!

There's also an excellent half hour television episode of the 1960's program, "The Twentieth Century" entitled, "The Movies Learn To Talk". It's hosted by Walter Cronkite.
