I don't like Particle Transfer Rollers PTR on 35mm film. They tend to just move dirt around. Imax uses PTRs on the incoming and outgoing side of the projector and they change them out for fresh, clean ones every show.

I use Kelmar media cleaners with Film-Guard once per week on each film. Some use them every show. We have shown Winged Migration for 34-weeks with no damage or visible dirt showing.

We use a Kelmar with Film Guard on our first show or two whenever we receive an obviously dirty print. We also will run a brand new print through new Film Guard & media at least once, just to eliminate any possibility of static.

Particle Transfer Roller (PTR) film cleaning can be quite effective. But as Large notes, you must clean any accumulated dirt after each show for them to have maximum effectiveness. A quick way to do this is to "see-saw" a piece of low-stick artist's tape or drafting tape on the roller to pick off the accumulated dirt. Almost EVERY lab, telecine transfer house, and IMAX theatre use PTR film cleaners, as they can effectively clean the film without putting anything on it.

If run dry, the media cleaners like the Kelmar and Christie can turn into an abrasive piece of sandpaper if they pick up abrasive dirt particles. I once saw an entire print with deep green scratches, caused by an accumulation of cement dust from some nearby booth construction. Film treatments like FilmGuard have made these cleaners much more suitable for cleaning and treating prints.

IMHO, a print should be cleaned EVERY time it is shown, for optimum presentation quality. Cleaning every time also keeps the dirt level so low that overloading a PTR or a media cleaner is not an issue.

OK, I just got my film cleaner (a Kelmar with Filmguard) a few weeks back and have used it a number of times now. While I don't use it for every performance, I have been using it more often then what they prescribe on film-tech. Say, once every four showings or so. I like how simple it is to use. As long as it isn't too dirty, can you reuse the pads often? How much filmguard to use? I soak the pads liberally with the stuff, but it tends to make the film kind of wet. Is this ok?

Putting too much FilmGuard on the film can lead to visible mottle and streakiness. The Film-Tech information and discussion are quite specific about this pitfall. A little goes a long way.

Better not discuss Film Guard on this site. We could get booted off of FilmTech.

Oh that's funny.
Actually it would be good to talk about it here as it saves me the trip. I havn't used Film Guard, I just can't bring myself to put anything on film. But neither have we had the problems that people want to cure. I'm listening.

I have not had a static problem since I started using the Kelmar film cleaner and pads soaked in Film Guard. If you remember, I went through months of major static problems a couple years ago.

I know Kodak has added some kind of anti-static "something-or-nother" to their film process, but I don't know if that or the film cleaner/Film Guard combo cured it for me. Whatever it was I am eternally grateful and will continue using the film cleaner.
