I was at the movies today with a friend. When the trailer for Taken was playing she whispered that she had seen that movie about a month or two ago through Netflix.

After the movie I questioned her about it. She said Netflix had recommended Taken to her. She ordered it, it came in the mail, and she and a bunch of friends watched it. She said it was the same movie as was in the trailer.

I then had my daughter try to order it. She said she couldn't as there was no release date.

Apparently the movie was released overseas in early fall. I read numerous reviews on the internet, most are quite positive.

Was it a fluke Netflix sent her the DVD? How does Netflix even get DVD's to send out prior to National release date? How many others have they released early?

Wierd.

Hi, Donna;

I checked out my Netflix site, and they also have TAKEN (a 2002 Sci-Fi channel miniseries), and TAKEN (a 2005 direct to DVD flick with Dabney Coleman) available. Have a feeling that your friend got one of those and just thought it was the same film.

Even if TAKEN came out in Europe, the Region 2 DVD would not play in a Region 1 player.

No, she assured me it was the same film. I just spoke with my Fox sales rep and he is checking into it. I think it was available, then pulled already.

According to a post on IMDB:

It came out in Europe in February last year, Australia in August and the UK in September.
An almost perfect copy has been online since early September.
It came out on Region 2 DVD not long after that.

There are more countries in the world than just the United States.

I imagine that Netflix was asked to take it out of circulation since they decided to release it in the U.S.

This is interesting a big problem though to those opening it. I wonder if Netflix will be fined or if Fox will send out a letter disclosing the hiccup.

Guess we'll see how it does this weekend. I did not hear back from Fox about this.

Emily, I think I met you at ShoWest a few years back. Had lunch or dinner together. Welcome to the forum.
