Read this very interesting article recently about the problems with archiving digital prints. They don't have a way to permanently save them yet!

Archival is an issue with every format, analog or digital. Of course film is a mature medium, so its characteristics are well-known. Not surprising, then, that scanning from the DI to film is a no-brainer as a 'safe' archival format while the studios work out a bulletproof method of storing these massive data files long-term.
