Many say that the over building of cineplexes started with AMC. It seems that now they have become the bull in the china shop once again. The have pulled out of NATO because they are not happy with the go-slow approach on digital projection technology. They have underwrote costs for prototype theaters to encourage the faster rollouts of the technology.

Of course they can well afford to do this. But in my humble opinion I think its a mistake. They would probably drive up ticket prices in these theaters and I think that most people think prices are high enough already.

Something about NATO must have ticked them off to make such a big symbolic gesture. Even if you disagree with a trade group about one or two things it's pretty petty to quit.

This is not a new tactic for AMC. They pulled the same thing back in the mid to late 1980's. I do not remember what is was that upset them back then. Once NATO aligns itself with AMC's thinking they will return. History always repeats itself.
