I don't know how technical this is but I was wondering what the difference is between the conventional 3-D proccess and the new IMAX proccess. I see ads for the both and was just curious. I saw an IMAX presantation last summer while in Qubec titled "Galapagos" which was a documentary on the Galapagos Islands and was very impressed. Images are much closer and sharper.

In my Imax experience the 3D process was the same. two projected images with polarized lenses and glasses. Its an amazing image and quite neat but the process is the same

It is indeed amazing. That's why I thought that it was a different proccess. So much better then what came before.

The much larger image area of a 15-perf or 8-perf 70 mm frame allows a much sharper and steadier image, and much more light than the 35 mm print format. Sharpness, steadiness and brightness are all very important for 3D projection. The IMAX system uses either polarized glasses (just like previous 35 mm systems) or their Personal Sound Environment (PSE) headsets using liquid crystal shutters to separate the left eye and right eye images. My favorite IMAX 3D movie was "Echoes of the Sun" which was projected on a dome screen with the PSE type headset (AKA "Solido") --- the 3D images literally surrounded you!
