Roxy-- we don't play a lot of R here, either, because it doesn't do well unless it is good. But it sounds like Bob is saying NO to everything R-rated regardless of any other factors. I think that's foolish.

Also, if I recall correctly, you're theater is an uncommonly gorgeous historic movie palace. Right? Your standard small town chopped-up-and-converted-to-multiple-screens theater isn't going to have the same appeal that your theater does no matter what. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear (or however the saying goes). You've also had your theater for a long time and probably aren't paying a lease/mortgage on it anymore, right? I couldn't dream of charging $3 a ticket. There aren't enough people in my town to make that work for how much I'm mortgaged.

Also, I don't buy into the idea that if you sell candy for a dollar people are going to buy 5X as much of it. In my experience, there are people who sneak it in, and people who buy it and my goal is to keep the people who buy it from me from becoming the types who sneak. It's a not-so-fine line.

Roxy,

Your theater is a beautiful palace! You are are in a small minority nationally. I do not know of any others on this forum who contribute regularly that have anything close to what you have. To say what you do will work for the Checotah-Gentry Cinema is a stretch. The facilities are no where near being close. And neither was mine. Not even close.

Narrow Guage,

"People told me when I went from one screen to two that I would lose twice the money....two screens to five that I had the wrong location...five to seven screens that I was crazy...that was in 1999." Those all sound like good things to me. Personally I would not want a theater smaller than 4 screens unless it was Roxy's palace.

No one is saying that playing "r" is the way to go. What most have said over the years was that there are many good "r" rated movies. We did awesome numbers on Black Swan for example and it mostly drew people over 50 years of age. To have a blanket no "r" policy is ......well not good. While many appreciate Bob's philosophy many will find it offensive. That "Hollywood produces crap" camp is getting smaller and smaller. Even folks in Mid-Missouri were very respective of Michael Sam's announcement last week. I am sure there were many who did not care for his news but they pretty much kept there mouth shut.

I am trying to figure what Bob's idea of programming is. To me it seems he plays what he can get his hands on because he is not digital. Looking through his 3 Facebook pages (why on earth do you have 3 pages Bob) he has played some movies that most would not have played in his position. But he is standing strong by his he can wait till the end of the year to go digital. (So you will not need community donations? Most successful theaters who have publicly raised money have been around for many years, not less than a few months).

Starting with Black Nativity. 4.0 IMDB score and a cumulative gross of $7 million. I have rarely seen a movie with poor grosses do well at a small town theater a couple weeks later. Am I wrong on this? That is one significant advantage to operating sub-run. You should have a good idea what will play well.

I am still baffled how you even played Anchorman 2. Shocked that your best booker ever who looks out for your best interests even thought about playing the movie at all.

Other odd choices: Madea's Christmas a month after Christmas, and Ender's Games while on DVD. Are you going to play Facing The Giants soon?

You were given a gift horse in Lego Movie but are not capitalized well enough?

But I guess I am just a "filth" monger too. Shoot, I used to have video stores that sold and rented porn! And those evil violent video games too!

My suggestion to those of you who disagree with me is to do so without being insulting and to continue doing what you think is right for your situation. I will continue to seek answers for my situation and do what is in accordance with my plan for this community. I have been in and out of this business since 1946 for a total of 26 years and the theatre I now manage has been in this community since 1949. So neither of us are newbies and with the help of God and brothers and sisters in the business who are interested in seeing others succeed rather than being "right-fighters" I will succeed.

Agreed.

Saying that other theaters are playing filth (when what they are playing is the norm) is insulting.

Saying that a theater operator will do anything to earn a buck even though they are hurting the community is insulting.

Not being honest with someone is insulting.

I pretty much disagree with everything Bob writes on here, however I do think the way thinks are "discussed" in this thread is lacking a lot of mutual respect. Questioning and criticing ones every move is not helpful in what surely must be the a stressful time for Robert and I can't fault him for lashing back. Once again I don't think Robert's way will suceed, but he has been promoting his thoughts for so long on this forum that I am happy he gets a chance to proof me wrong.
Good luck!
Jay

Pot calling the kettle black if I've ever seen it. You keep talking about other cinema owners as purveyors of filth, out to make a quick buck, and operating in ways that are harmful to the community...because we play movies like Lone Survivor.

I don't question your integrity, I question your business acumen. Pointing to your experience in the business is pointless if you are making poor decisions within the current market dynamics. You are making poor decisions for your business because you are operating from the perspective that things are the same today as they were in 1946. They aren't.

You keep talking about how you are doing good for the community, yet I look at your interactions with people in the community on your facebook page. They are often terse and uninviting. You taunt people who want to see new movies or R-rated movies.

You want to know what we do for our community? I'll leave with a screen cap of one of the many sweet messages we get every week from customers.

There are a number of complementary remarks about my theatre and staff on facebook. You just chose not to publish them. How sad that you want to continue to be insulting. My opinion about Hollywood and what other exhibitors play is just that, my opinion. If you are offended by my opinion then perhaps you should re-think what you are showing. Here's a few for your consideration Andrew:

I didn't say anything about your customers not liking you, I said YOUR comments to people on your facebook page are problematic. You mock people for being excited about and wanting to see new movies when they come out. You mock people for being willing to drive 30 minutes and spend twice as much to see the movie, which story will still be the same 2 months later when you play it. Keep that up, surefire way of keeping the lights on.
