TOPIC: Blu ray first run

Blu ray first run 03 Sep 2014 13:31 #41368

Well, scratch Sony Classics from that list. They only screen older titles on Bluray/DVD according to their booker. Since I also own a video store down the street, screening something that's hit DVD already doesn't make much sense at all. It's too bad, because their films are a major void here (we didn't even get Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive" here, to the disappointment of many). We only get their Woody Allen movies. Meh.

If you only have a digital projector ( not dcp) you should look into signing up with Emerging Pictures .
Emerging provides legal theatrical digital that is not dcp .
It is limited but some good studios .

we played Snowpiercer and it was a Weinstein/ Radius picture on DCP... only grossed 5 mill in USA but 87 mill worldwide so far and it was a VOD and theatrical and I just checked and yes... we could have had it on Blue Ray... so it makes the point that you could successfully open an arthouse type theatre and maybe never go full dcp digital. If so many distribs are choosing to release on DVD etc.... what's the point? If the product you want to show is available anyway?

This theater is in my immediate are and does not have a DCP projector. Their website says they are fundraising for one. They played Snowpiercer on BR as well.

Thanks! Interesting, maybe I'll try again with Sony Classics, though they re-directed me to the department that does DVD releases...

Also, I wanted to show Snowpiercer SO BADLY. I wonder if I can get a second run of it before it hits DVD? Is second run even a thing that distributors do anymore?

Do you have an account with any of these companies for this theater or any other theaters you might be involved with? If you're just cold calling them, I wouldn't be surprised if they're just passing you off and not taking you seriously. In your situation, I think it would be worth considering working with a booker for a while to get you started. There are a few guys on this board who could help you. (Forgive me if you've already addressed that in this or other threads).

Focus has never had blu ray available ..

Regards to Sony Classics that must be a new policy last year I played blu ray .
There might be some semantics there also on the word first run typically if your not in Ny or La Sony classic first run pictures may not be available in your markets till 3 /4 months after opening .
