Business has been unbelievably horrible for us in Indiana as well.

We just came off the worst September that we can remember.

Meatballs looks like the only thing in the near future for us that will do anything. Got Julie and Julia this week, and it's doing so-so.

We are trying a month of Halloween movies this year for Oct.
Started off with Beetlejuice this weekend, but it has not gone well.
Makes me nervous for the rest of the month.

This month we are playing all Halloween/thriller in one house and normal in the other.

Halloween/thriller movies we are doing:
Beetlejuice
Goonies
Jaws
The Lost Boys
Casper
Poltergeist
Vertigo
Rear Window
Psycho

These better do something or we are in a heap-o-hurt.

I guess misery loves company. It'll turn around. This happens every year to a point where I figure I'm doing something wrong and then somebody somewhere flips a switch in November and the crowds start coming back again. It's tough not to get discouraged though.

Next week maybe more likely as Where the Wild Things will push it off. We will keep ours until Astro Boy.

Hard to get much when they are putting out not many prints. This week and last week only see 1 film having more than 2000 locations.

another weekend in October and another incredibly bad weekend for my theater. Sure tough to not get disappointed when they're staying away in droves. What do you do to keep your spirit up?

The good news is we have a 3500 location movies next week (Where The Wild Things Are) and 2 other 2500+ movies. I do not recall having such a wide release movie in October. PLus the other 2 new ones should push off some movies for move-over.

On another note, we have an 8-plex nearby that has a digital/3d screen and they must be having trouble finding stuff to fill as they brought back Harry Potter.

This time of year is always slow, and I'm happy to say that for myself, it's pretty much the same as the past several years.

There are usually sixteen weeks from Labor Day until the end of the year. I generally expect to make a profit on only five of those weeks, lose money on six of them and break even on the other five. Hopefully, the profitable weeks will wash out the losers, but some years that just doesn't happen. I have always made it a habit to have a certain amount of money set aside as of Labor Day to see me through the rest of the year even if things would be much worse then that.

This year my September BO was down by 3% from last year, but my concession was up 12%... so dollars coming in the door was ahead for the month. And of course I'd rather have it that way as we get to keep more of the concession dollars.

October is a different story. As of right now I'm down 30% from the same point last year, but that's because of one picture... MAMA MIA which did so huge last year. The remaining two weeks of this month I'll be playing JULIE & JULIA which should do much better then what I played during those weeks last year: JOURNEY to the Center of the Earth and STAR WARS, the Clone Wars, both which did poorly. My prediction is that by the end of the month I'll only be about 10% behind last year for October. So far for the entire year my BO is still 2% ahead of last year, which was the best year I've ever had, and I've been here for 40 years. Concession for the year is up 10%.

As a sub-run, my product availability is similar to leerer and tratcliff, yet I still have enough playable product to get me though the Thankgiving weekend. I still have G-Force, Aliens in the Attic, Inglourious Basterds and Meatballs... not all great, but playable. After the holiday weekend I go to weekends only for the next three weeks and play off junk. Then I reopen full time as of Christmas and run a big picture for the final week of the year. This year it looks as though that will be A CHRISTMAS CAROL.

Hi leeler:

When you play the classics do you put much effort into promotion?

In one of my towns they do a "haunted hay ride" and run thousands through it each night. It is "the" thing to be at and be seen at. I pray for a cold rain! It murders us.

Thank you zombies!

Same here with the haunted hayrides. We also have haunted mills and something they call scream in the park. All are very popular with people. Also when Halloween falls on a weekend (like it does this year) that tends to hurt attendance also.
