The rule of thumb that I have seen most often quoted in my 40 years in this business is one screen per 10,000 of population - that is if you want to make any kind of decent profit.

Years ago that was the rule of thumb. When the average theater had 600 seats it was 1 per 10,000........With the average auditorium about 150 to 2oo seats i use the 3 in 10,000 rule..Some time back we had a good discussion on a forum about this.I will look for it....

BOX OFFICE MOJO
WEEKEND PREVIEW
PREPARED FOR
Friday, April 4, 2008

Family adventure 'Nim's Island' marks the weekend's broadest debut with more than 4,100 screens at 3,513 theaters.

I would say, that's not pulling back.

hmmm....that kinda makes me upset. With that many prints it seems they yanked it from independents. What can you say to the distributor when they tell you "no"..? Is it worth pressing for a print of something especially when it's that wide? I feel I should have spoken up a bit more and asked more questions as to "why" the local crappy chain cinema got it and I didn't.....

I book independents, and I had no issue getting it. How does your theatre gross compared to the chain? It's all about numbers...

Did 600 theaters really need a 2nd print of this? (Please see earlier thread about multiple print economics) I did get it but we do really well with family friendly fare.

Absolutely. You will have theatres in large metro areas that will gross $30k+ on this.

My biggest competitor has 2 prints as well. That means 3 prints in a market of approx. 75,000 people. I will be shocked if they do anywhere near $6k or more the first week per print. In a market 30 miles away with 150,000 people they have 2 prints total.

mike you say its all about the numbers....but a chain will almost get a pic over an indie no matter what the numbers...

That's a very cynical way of looking at things...

I typically am able to book what I need/want, and I'm certainly not booking chain theatres...

To be fair ... I don't have any competitive theatres. All are free zones. I have played several pictures on the break in very limited release catering to a particular demographic. For example, I had 2 dates along with AMC for "Cover." Regal had zero in Atlanta, even their urban theatres.

I also had one of 6 on the break in Atlanta for Under The Same Moon. 3 Regals, 1 AMC, 1 Landmark and me.

1 of 6 for Bella on the break in Atlanta. 3 Regals, 2 AMC's and me.
