Saturday was worse for us. Snakes was last. It was beat (well) by "Superman" / "Cars" combo... and you know how long those films have been out!

The people who DID show up, enjoyed the film... a lot. There just weren't many of them.

Sorry to hear of the low numbers. I still, really liked it, but haven't played it yet. The numbers are scaring me, especially since there were only 8 people in my auditorium last night for Miami Vice. Can't remember when I ever had that few show up on a Saturday night.

Snakes is going to end up as our #4 for the weekend. Talladega roared back to our #1 spot on Saturday. I do see looking at the national numbers. If Snakes $1.4m thurs 10pm grosses are taken out. It would be the #2 movie nationally.

Some good quotes off the Reuters news wires:
The only problem was that the title so handily summed up the film's plot that there was little incentive to see it, said Brandon Gray, an analyst at boxofficemojo.com.

"This tells you that you need to have a compelling story or premise to get an audience for your movie," he said.

But filmmaking-by-Internet committee has its limits. Industry surveys in recent weeks indicated only modest interest among the moviegoing masses. New Line found itself both playing up the film's unusual backstory and playing down its sales expectations. It did not screen the movie in advance for critics, a common tactic when a studio fears the reviews will be less than complimentary.

People are afraid to fly and hate snakes more than anything..bad combo for a movie.thats why i called it before it opened as not doing well.

Exactly what the wife said when she first heard the title.

Oh well on to the next big wide release dud. They have been stacking up pretty good this last part of summer. Lady in the Water, Ant Bully and now Snakes....

In a way, New Line shot themselves in the foot. This was originally shot to be a PG13 but got changed to an R to satisfy the fanboys. IMHO, pic would have opened atleast to 5-7 mil. more with a lower rating. I'm in a very conservative area and R doesn't play well. Snakes lost out to Accepted, Material Girls and Barnyard here.

Thurs 10pm show had less than 20 in it. Barnyard did #1. I was I had Ricky Bobby Back or held off for 2 movies this coming week.

I agree with a PG-13 rating I would have had at least one or 2 good showings of SOaP with my teen crowd.

Also the Universities around are all starting up this week so all my collage students who would come to an R movie were not in town.

Pretty slow out here, too. There are also several fairs in our area, too... not to mention that people here are starting to get distracted with "back to school".

We've had a great year... probably our best... but I think were well into the downhill slide to the end of the season.
