I thought I might give this forum a try. Our company is releasing a low-budget feature film in late August. We are currently exporing all of our options right now, but are leaning to doing our own distribution. Since this is our first effort, we are looking for qualified bookers, impressive PR firms, etc. I was hoping someone from the exhibitors perspective could steer us in the best direction. Thanks for your help.

Depending on what type of release you are looking for, you first should get some form of PR firm to get at least a screening for critics. So from there you have some form of written reviews to work with. And the PR firm can judge how to handle the film for you.

One firm here in NYC, that we work with on many indie type pictures. Is Jeremy Walker.

Thanks, we're already talking with a number of PR Firms to determine the best fit. We've also generated a fair amount of interest from distributors just based on the trailer. The movie is currently in post, but should be completed March 1. If we did use a distributor, which one's would you recommend. We obviously wouldn't want to give our film to a distributor that has a bad rap with the exhibitors.

Thanks.

Well each distributor does well with different types of films. What kind of film is yours? It's not the bad rap with exhibitors, it's the best way a distributor can market your film and give you the best return on your money. Because you will get different stories from different people on how different distributors treated them on many different films. If your picture is a small independent type picture. You might try NewMarket, ThinkFilms or IFC Films.

Avco, that's part of our challenge. Our film is definitely a low-budget independent. But it really has the look and feel of a bigger budget movie. It's about "Faith and Football". It should do very well in the South and Bible Belt, but it will probably have a strong "general market" appeal as well. We're actually meeting with one of the head marketing advisor to "Greek Wedding" on Monday to discuss our marketing strategy. She says it would be difficult to find a distributor that would really appreciate the niche were going for. We are hoping to meet with New Market, because of their experience with The Passion, but we're leaning toward doing this on our own. Thanks for any further advice you can think of.

You may want to "network" with distributors at ShoWest.

Try Lions gate and IFC. They specialize in those type of movies. I make indy horror and it is a different approach. It is better to do self distribution on that an overseas.
You be surprised at the response you get with your movie. It is all about presentation and how you market it.We have like a cult following but no real big deal yet!
Easier said then done but if you really beleive in your project don't give up and send out those screeners. You never know who will see, just beware of people asking for money. You have the product and should be given you money!

Thanks for the referals and for giving me a "headsup" on going to ShoWest. I plan on following up on both.
