Well, September REALLY SUCKED.
We were closed for two weeks last year for major equipment repair and replacement, and still grossed more than this year.
I've talked to some friends that say they are experiencing the same. How was it around the country?

Down 2.5% this year for the month of September, but up slightly for the quarter.

This September was down slightly from last year. Box office was down 5%, but concession was down 15% due to more adult product this year. However, this September was still better then two years ago. As a subrun, I usually do better in September then the first runs do as I'm still playing product from the summer. For me, it looks as though October will be quite slow.

Our September was down 34% from last year. Crap out there... no "Pirates" to keep us warm.

On the other hand, our overall year was only off by 5%. Maybe it was because the shows out there were uniformly mediocre... no blockbusters to make the rest of the card look bad. We noticed our weekday business was pretty steady this Summer.

This business has always been something of a roller coaster ride with peaks and valleys. Maybe its just me, but its seems that for mainstream product over the last 3 or 4 years the highs keep getting higher (over a much short time frame and for a fewer number of pictures) while the lows keep getting lower (over a much longer time). When you average it out, the net still comes out about the same but it sure makes staffing, cash flow etc that much more difficult for the theatre operator to deal with. It also geneerally means higher film rental.

This trend has even extended into my second run arena. It used to be there were a few what I called "discount" pictures - those that didn't do that well first run - because people wouldn't spend $7 or $8 per ticket but such pictures were still worth seeing on the big screen at $2 or $3. However this does not seem to be the case any longer. No matter how good - or bad - a picture is, if it didn't do any business first run it now does nothing second run.

See what the 8,000 print megaplex universe has wrought.

Our September: down 6.66% from last year.

What hurt us? - 1)being turned down for Without A Paddle. 2)No concession sales to seniors. What helped us - 1)Bourne Supremacy split with The Notebook worked well for weeks 2) De-Lovely!
