Guys,

How did 'The Fog of War' do for you? I am considering it for a hole in my schedule in May. I'm in the preliminary stages of getting my account set up with sony classics
and I don't know what to expect with this one. Were you able to get one sheets and trailers for it? As this movie hasn't seen that much advertising yet, I am also considering getting a standee or something to drum up some business. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

LEE <> "Fog of War" got excellent critical reviews, but opened to generally soft business, had practically no promotion by Sony, and documentaries are a tough sell in small towns... Unless you have an extremely astute audience, I would think a long time on this one... Besides, by May it will have been in release for about 5 months, and the video window will most likely be closing... With a one screen, I don't think it's a good idea to be booked more than 3-4 weeks in advance... Things change too quickly, and if you're locked in, it's tough to unload a loser for something fresh and hot (especially if you have front money involved)... You can go ahead with gathering the promotion stuff, but wait to nail down a date... If you don't play it, it's not a big expense, but if you decide to, you'll have the stuff... Staying flexible has lots of advantages!...

I opened two FOGs this weekend. One was very good; the other dropped dead.

I have two more next week in smaller markets. Will let you know how they fare.

Thanks for the advice. I have been trying to have a schedule out that far but I haven't booked things that far out by a long shot. I hope they at least have some promotional things. I think it'll need plenty of advertising from me to make it work. I'll keep considering it, though.

By the way, this weekend was 'Cheaper by the Dozen' and it has been my best to date. I sold out three shows and had strong attendance on the other five as well. average of 88 tix per show. Lots of kids bringing the per caps up consderably too. I am very pleased!

Fog's Oscar win will help for a few days, but by May, nobody will remember...

Bookings for March:
Lotr: Rotk (Second week)
In America
My Architect
Monster

I'm hoping the Oscar wins last night will really boost our sales for RotK and Monster. I feel that In America should do pretty well too. We are hoping to have the Kahn's son come to speak at one of our showings of My Architect. It is also going to be required viewing for our college's Architecture Department.

How Fog does will vary by market. Is your market more liberal or conservative? More democratic or republican? In liberal leaning, democratic, full of ex-hippies and still hippies, Fog does well. And Sony Classics supports the film in the markets it works in. They also bought TV for it the week of the 27th, which is a big deal for them. Remember Sony Classics doesn't have the budgets that big Sony does and spends its promotions money wisely.
