We are going to have to choose between the two Sony films for Christmas. Which one do you think looks stronger: Somthing Gotta Give or Mona Lisa Smiles. I think Mona Lisa, but I seem to be in the minority. What do you all think?

I'd say Mona Lisa Smile .... it seems to be tracking slightly better, but depends on your audience.

I hate to choose between them as I want them both. However, we went with Mona Lisa Smile partly based on reaction to the poster and partly based on its placement. I think that the Friday before Christmas placement signals the stronger product. 2nd week in December is traditionally weak and the cachet of the new movie is not there when the movie is 1 week old and only did XX at the box office in its first week. We think that Mona Lisa is a good counter product for Lord of the Rings for the female demographic. Unfortunately we could have women waiting in the lobby for hours while their husbands are in seeing LOTR3. Young females also seemed very interested in the mix of actresses in Mona Lisa. Not just Julia Roberts, but Julia Stiles, Kirsten Dunst and Maggie Gyllenhaal(?). We will all just have to see.

Hope that you picked "Somethings Gotta Give". We are actually doing very well with it. Mona Lisa Smiles has had bad advance screening results, and bad reviews.

It is one of the absolute absurdities of this business but here you have a studio esentially competing against itself. Why would Sony release two pictures which are pretty much aimed at the same audience release one week apart?

We had decided to go with Jack but didn't like the terms and passed. Had to decide between Mona Lisa or Cold Mountain and decided Mona Lisa would be better for the holidays and Cold Mountain would play just as well later. We had more requests for Mona Lisa so here's hoping.... Should have a good mix for Christmas week: Return of the King, Peter Pan, Cheaper by the Dozen, Mona Lisa Smile and Paycheck.

We are in a pickel, we HAD confirmed Cheaper by the dozen for the weekend starting the 26th, but they pulled it saying they now wanted us to play it 4 weeks!
we are a small town, single screen and just would never pull that off...

Same problem with LOTR and a few others, only film we were even able to book now was Peter Pan, 2 weeks, but judging from the responce (or lack of it) from when I ran the trailer for 2 weeks, I dunno how well it's gonna do...

does not seem to be aimed at children (YOUNG) and personally did not seem all that appealing to most of the adults, and I dunno about the teens...

I'm not going to run week day matinee's durring vacation like normal for a kiddie xmas movie so I dunno what to expect.

what are your opinions?

Tony.
