I have not found one child that even wants to see this film and the reviews for it are awful. On Movie Fone.com it is right now only the fifth most searched for title, behind titles like Elf, Gothika, Love Actually and Master and COmmander. This film is going to bomb big time folks. There is also a lot of controversy surrounding the films questionable nature. I really don't think that parents are going to take children to a film filled with penis jokes, Paris Hilton and the Cat calling the children's mother a "dirty Ho" I was watching a segement on Tonight Show last night and Mike Myers even stated in the film clip that he "liked the smell of fresh balls" My prediction for this weekends box office is

1. Elf 24 million
2. Cat In The Hat 18 million
3. Master and Commander 15 million
4. Gothika 12 million
5. Love Actually 11 million

"T," I don't think you'll need to be scoping out any tall buildings... The clips I have seen of the Cat are not quite what I hoped for, and it probably would have had made a much better fully animated movie, but with the built in following the Cat already has, it will most likely bury all the negatives... I would bet the family jewels that this will open big and hold on well, in spite of Mansion, which I have even more faith in... You can expect at least an excellent first week with the Cat, and a very decent play out...

So the fact that Cat is only ranked fifth in ticket sales on the most popular movie site on the internet doesn't make you doubt Cat. Not saying that Cat wont open at #1 but even if it opens with 38 million, it would still be considered a dissapointment. I just think that Elf is too strong to fall to the Cat at this moment. I think everyone laughed when I said that Matrix was going to fall hard too.

You could be right but I can not think of any film in the history of motion pictures with reviews as awful as Cat has gotten that has opened with 50 million plus. I could be wrong since this is a kids movie but Elf is not showing signs of stopping at this moment and we see what happened to Looney Toons and even Brother Bear because of Elf.

I think that once parents find out how horrible this film is, WOM will spread FAST. It already has started to spread.

I have no desire to even see this movie. It looks stupid.

well---opening night in 2 of my small towns beat opening night of "Elf"---now I am waiting patiently to hear what the customers have to say when they exit.

I may have been wrong about the Elf thing but 40.1 million for Cat is well below expectations. They were expecting 60-80 million. It did hold up well for the weekend after a lackluster opening day though. The thing is that it may not hold up well next weekend. Instead of holding up like other films do during holiday frames, it is going head to head with Haunted Mansion. I suspect you could be seeing a similar situation you say last year with Bruce Almighty beating Matrix Reloaded. Remember that Daddy Day Care opened very strong and that was not even during a holiday frame

Well, after UNIVERSAL FORGETTING TO SEND OUR BOOKING INFO to Technicolor, and NOT getting our print till 8PM Friday night, (7PM start time) and having to send 400-500 people HOME with no movie to show, we still managed about $4500 Sat-Sun Mon and a Tues 10:30AM showing...

I am NOT impressed with the film, but the croud sure is hungry!
$930 in concessions Sat nite, and close to that on Sunday...

Sold out Sat nite and about 50 seats left on sunday...

Friday was a nightmare!

The theatres old owner stopped in, and commented on how my hair (whats left of it) will be as gray as his after a few of thease kind of days!

Didn't open as big as some thought, but boy is it keeping up since last weekend! Looks like a modest drop; if it stays this strong through the weekend, we would actually be looking at a stronger second frame - up about 10% over last weekend locally!

I would say that it could be more than a modest drop. It's in third place at the box office as of Thursday, with Elf being #1 and Haunted Mansion #2. Looks like these three will be duking it out for the weekend and 5 day takes. I would have to say that I believe Haunted Mansion will probably come out of top with Elf at #2 and Cat at #3. One thing I must say is that this is looking one of the least productive Thanksgiving 5 Day weekend box office takes yet. i could be wrong I guess but the numbers so far are not killer. Cat did come in at #1 on Wednesday but then fell on Thanksgiving Day, a given usually since it is a Holiday. BUT, Haunted Mansion did not drop and Elf actually gained momentum from Wednesday.
