I had a rude awakening Monday morning when someone from the Fire Department rang my doorbell, waking me from a deep sleep. I opened the door and heard: "Donna, we need the keys to the theatre, the the theatre is on fire." Well, I haven't gotten much good sleep since then. But, I was very lucky. The auditorium and projection room are fine. The lobby had alot of water on the floor caused by an overzealous firefighter who pulled my cappuccino machine away from the wall and broke the water valve off inside the machine.
The concession area needs a new coat of paint, but was cleaned up by some wonderful friends and patrons and looks pretty good now. The upstairs storage area and the large hole (approx. 12' X 4') in the building don't look that great though. I have two contractors coming over tomorrow to check it out. The Fire Chief thinks it was caused by my neon on the top face of the building. Here's a link with actual video: http://www.im-news.com/

Jeeze, BURNEY, you sure have all the bad luck!... Just about anything that can happen to mess things up for you has happened there... Too far away to do much but offer a lot of sympathy, and best wishes that it won't put you off screen for too long... I hope you are adequately insured, and that they will put it back like it was for you... Fire is always bad news, and the efforts to put it out often do more damage than the fire itself... You are due for a run of good luck, you have sure earned it!...

Hopefully you are up and running again soon, and your insurance covers all the damage.

Neon can be nasty. The drive-in I used to work at had a metal screen tower, with large plywood "comedy" and "tragedy" masks on it, outlined with neon. One night the neon on the "tragedy" mask started a fire. Now the theatre only shows comedies.

Yes, that is snow. It was 90 degrees last week and there was about four inches of snow on the ground that morning! I am in the mountains in Northern California.

It did not close me down. I was open that night although business is down. There isn't any detectable odor in the lobby, concession area or the auditorium. Upstairs is another story. It reeks up there. Yes, I have good insurance, thank God. I ran my first two years without any insurance--couldn't get any because of a myriad of electrical issues. I had a small fire during that time caused by a HVAC contractor who did something wrong on the A/C install. I was quite adamant with the Fire Department at the time not to destroy anything!!!!!!

The neon has been a problem since it was first installed. It was always going out and breaking on the ends. I have used three different neon companies for repair. The initial installer, who apparently did not install it properly according to the other two guys, is now out of business and probably out of the area.

Yes, luck has not been on my side for awhile. But I did catch four little monsters the other day who threw a paintball on my building. I heard them between my building and nextdoor, tiptoed down my stairs, out the front door and over to the fence, and scared the crap out of them! They were going to throw paintballs at passing motorists from behind my fence, totally concealed from view; their paintballs were all lined up on the top rail. One of them came back with a Deputy Sheriff and cleaned up his mess. They had been there the week before, throwing apples at cars, but heard me running down the stairs and got away before I made it outside. If I already posted that somewhere else forgive me--I'm a little rattled and stressed these days.

Sorry to hear about your fire. I'm certainly glad that it wasn't enough to shut you down. It must have been a good feeling when your friends and patrons came to your aid to get the theatre cleaned up to reopen. It just shows how much they appreciate what you have done for their community by restoring the theatre.

As the song says... just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again. Thanks to quick reporting from a passerby, a good response from the fire department, and the help of true friends, that shouldn't be too difficult to do.

Best of luck to you.

Glad to hear it wasn't total. Are you the Fire Commissioner? Sounds like you were awful lucky not to have it go all the way. Are you sprinklered? Burglars and fire: what next?

Well, I would like to say now is a good time to buy a lottery ticket. i'm glad that everything is ok and that you are still in business.
I think I would be happy with a bunch of over-zealous firemen! Beats the marshmallow toasting boys.

I am one of five Fire Commissioners--just got re-elected.

I don't have any sprinklers or monitored smoke or fire detectors. Yes, I think I was very lucky. I have the utmost respect for our Fire Chief, our lieutenant, and our dedicated, professional volunteers. They got the fire and smoke under control relatively quickly (seemed like days at the time, though) and did so using very little water.

Now I just have to get the word out that I am open and there is no smoke odor. Several people have called or stopped me in town to ask how long I would be closed. That is very disheartening.

Hey Burney!

I wanted to cry for you because I know you have put a lot of work into that place. But I decided to pray for you instead. Hang in there. You can overcome this.

Hope you get back on your feet quickly
Neon has always been an issue many older theatres had neon cove lights in the ceiling and often when we would be in the attic pulling speaker wires we would find scoarch marks around the transformer which had melted the potting tar out all over the place

It seems to be very difficult to get any good neon these days several theatres here have constant replacement issues on there signs

Pending that all the wires weren't damaged, make sure to take full advantage of your exterior LED sign and inform everyone that you are not closed and that all is well.

Let me know if there is anything you need.

The LED sign is intact and as soon as the power was restored was flashing: THE SHOW MUST GO ON. WE ARE OPEN !

I hope to have the neon completely redone and hope the insurance will continue to insure it and pay for at least part of it.
