I have never called to cancel a movie before; but today I got an offer I couldn't refuse for a week deal on the 24th and need to cancel a prior commitment with another studio. I am sure this happens fairly frequently, but I sure don't want to upset the studio I am cancelling. It looks like I might not be able to fit their movie in later either. I will call tomorrow to cancel, but wonder if I can expect ramifications.

Well, you're not going to score any points with them, but IF they can sell it to someone else, they may let you off the hook... Depends on how "hot" the picture is... I had a situation once where I booked a picture for a week, but the booker thought it was for 2 weeks... I returned the print and sent in the BO report the night it closed, and a couple of days later he called me... He was not a happy camper!... In the meanwhile, the confirmation had come in the mail... He had written it up to play two weeks... I explained, offered to finish the playoff later, and apologized for the misunderstanding... He apologized to me and said forget it... We continued to do business on a friendly basis, and there were never any repercussions... Hope you are as lucky!...

If they decide ala Miramax and Duplex or Chicago to go "more limited" they would pull your print in a heartbeat. Will there be ill feelings? There are when I don't play anything everytime on every screen. As far as I can tell some reps think (believe!)they own your screen and view any product other than theirs as trespassers. They will try to talk you out of it so be strong and grovel but be prespared to stick to it.

Amen, MIKE <> They will jerk your print at the last minute without blinking an eye, and leave you scrambling... But when the shoe is on the other foot, they are less than understanding... Still, they are sitting with a full house, and you are holding a pair of deuces, so you'd better be a real diplomat when you have to cross swords with 'em...

Well, I called and said I was sorry to have to cancel and she just said OK in a friendly tone and then we talked about a holiday kids movie I am interested in getting on opening day. No problem. No pressure. That's a relief.

Well, I thought everything was taken care of until a few minutes ago when Technicolor advised me my print of the movie I cancelled will be delivered tomorrow at noon via Sky Courier. You know that means it is being circuited. Circuited prints here often come from Reno--about 200 miles from here--via taxi cab of all things. I called Technicolor and told them I cancelled that print two weeks ago. He checked with somebody, called me back and said it was still coming, to accept it, and they would arrange a pick-up. I will call the distributor in the morning to try to stop the shipment and high cost of worthless shuffling of the print. Unbelievable.

It all evens out in the end... 2 prints for this playdate will be compensated for by sending NO print for a future playdate ;-} ...

The process doesn't work any better with a booker either. Airborne showed up on a Friday to pick up our print of Whale Rider which was running for week 2. As our driver was new we carefully explained that he needed to enter it into his computer as "Heldover" rather than as an attempted pickup which would cause Airborne to bill us for the non pickup. That went well. We kept Whale Rider for 3 weeks. I got a call from Technicolor on the last night asking if the print was still running and when we were going to send it out. I said that its last show was that night and Technicolor said that they would schedule a pickup. Fine. The print was duly picked up the next day. Fine. On Monday the same Airborne driver showed up to pick it up again. I said "You already got it on Friday". He said "Yeah I did." I hope that one doesn't come back to bite us.

A system is only as good as its weakest link.

But which link would that be John??? At least with Technicolor there are so many to choose from.

My other favorite is the studio(s) that book their pictures into theatres for six weeks and then don't bother update Technicolor if the picture plays longer or shorter. I can't tell you how many times Technicolor sent Airborne to pick-up our Bowling for Columbine print last year (we played about 20 weeks) and then City of Ghosts sat here for 4 weeks (it only played a week).
