The following is an e-mail I received from Nicole Jean. I thought her information interesting and asked if I could post it. I was particularly intrigued by their imense amount of films they play on a 4 screen theatre and her response to that question is in the second post. Read on!

Post 2 from Nicole in response to my wow!
Hi Mike,

Thanks for your email!

We have been fortunate enough to carve out a niche in our
very saturated market. Melbourne has a population of
well over 3 million people, and our market stretches across
the whole city as we screen many movies after they have
totally finished everywhere else. In any city, the multiplexes
spend a few weeks wringing the life out of say Gladiator, for example
but by the time we come in (4-6 weeks later..varies) the film has almost
finished everywhere else in town and it is ALL ours!! So
for our 'little' family business, the leftover audiences are more
than we can handle, for the bigger movies, and quite
impressive for the smaller or more arty style of film.

Sometimes we come in during policy (picking up a print
that was doubling at a multilex) and we will then play it
as policy dictates, but we generally keep away from being told
what to do, as we really don't need first run or quick move over.

We went first run with Stuart Little over the Easter holidays
and did record business for ourselves and were one of the most
successful independent cinemas in Australia, however once
the holidays finished, we (and all cinemas screening Stuart) were forced
to play sessions day and night when kiddies were back at school,
and the profits began to thin out.... we would have been more
profitable running sub run kiddie flix as we usually do!!! (and
are doing over our winter holidays, as Dinosaur would also
suck the lifeblood after school starts again.. Stuart Little, Iron
Giant, Tigger will be golden and on OUR terms!! )

Our film hire deals seem to differ from those in America to
some degree.... the majority of the time, when we come in on
a film, we can screen it as few or as many times as we like,
for around 25-35% .. guarantees are generally around AU$175
so we make sure we screen enough sessions to clear the
guarantee if the film happens to be a bomb!!

So basically, by the time we screen movies, the distributors
have already moved onto newer movies, and as long as we
let them know what we are doing, they are happy to let us run
the way we want to, which is thankfully the last thing that the local
multiplexes would want to do!!

The variety of film is something that other locations just can't
handle and the 'free' publicity we get in MElbourne's largest
newspaper is priceless.

Cheers,

Nicole
