I'm reaching out for some help with concessions.

I am starting a small two screen theater. To make it simple assume 100 seats in each theater (200 total).

What percentage of the for each theater should I assume will buy concessions for each movie? I'm going to assume that the average customer who purchases concessions will buy either a drink and popcorn or a drink and candy.

What has been your experience? 30%, 50%, 70%?

We are consistently at 27% of gross sales being concessions. Which works out for us to be $2.40 per cap.

First off I think 100 seats is kinda small to justify two digital projectors.if you have room to expand later then I'd recommend making the others around 150-200.

It think $2.40 is fairly average for first run, if this is a discount theater, depending on what price range for concessions you have you may be between $1.50-$2.00

Awesome thank you both very much Ptwin and Tom.

I'll see what I can do about expanding the seats. I'll have to see what the final space will allow.

Thanks for the advice!

Andrew's per cap is more in line with what traditional theatres should be looking for.
Anything under $3.00 is room for concern. Beer and wine theatres and certainly food and adult beverage theatres should be much higher.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

This will be a beer and wine theater which your right, should bump the percentage from 27%ish to hopefully 40%ish. I will also have a wood fired pizza restaurant in the front of the house that ticket buyers can bring into the movies. So it might get a little more tricky to est. percentages. I was just hoping to get an idea from you guys to help finish my financials.

I will be a discount theater ($4/tic), showing sub-run movies. There is one other theater in town that is a 9 screen that is a first run. They do not server beer or wine and did 337,000 ticket sales in 2012. I'm hoping to capture 15% of those sales my first year. Fingers crossed.
