If I own a DVD copy of a film (from any era) and I want to show it in my theatre do I just call the distributor and ask how much the rent will be or must I get a DVD from the distributor. Can the distributor prevent me from showing a DVD of a film that is not in current release?

Mr. Allen:
Yes, you can license the film from the theatrical distributor. They will not send you the DVD.
Yes, a distributor can stop you from showing a film that they don't want in release.

Earlier this year Warner Brothers stopped the theatrical showing of The Wizard of Oz (Garland version.)

Sometimes classic movie rights can be hard to pin down. The DVD distributor may not own the theatrical rights.

Good luck. Classics on the big screen are fun. I appreciate you wanting to do this right through a distributor.
