I am in the process of starting small discount theater (2 screens with 100 seats or less in each theater). My challenge is I want to use digital projectors in each theater but I can not afford the $60K each for new digital projectors. Film projectors seem to becoming obsolete in the industry so I don't want to invest in them.

Can I purchase a high end home projector (in the $9k-$12 range) that will throw a distance of 60'-100' and project a quality picture on a screen that is between 30' and 40' wide?

I heard of theaters that have started this way and then upgraded when they could afford to.

you'll really need to get a projector that follows the DCI spec in order to get product from the studios. This is the cheapest one I know about. I've seen it working and the picture is great for smaller screens.

simple answer is NO. There is a kind of movie theatre that is showing dvd's or blue rays and odd ball stuff from various alt content people and if that's all you ever want to show: you can buy the cheapest video projector out there and if your customers don't care then why not? But if you ever hope to actually wear the name THEATRE and all that the name implies and you actually want to show movies .....you are looking at more like a minimum of 36K for projector/server/sound/screen.
