I have heard rumors that new financial management at Warners is taking a hard look at its continued servicing of low grossing theatres vis-a-vis its costs of service for those venues.

Is it possible that print counts will be lower because megaplexes need fewer copies? It seems like the equipment I've read about allows one hard drive to be used to provide the needed files for multiple screens in one complex. If there is one or two less copies in distribution for every megaplex using this system, that would add up (or should I say subtract down) to a significantly smaller number of copies in distribution.

However if this is the reason for the lower numbers, it shouldn't leave any more theaters without copies than there were before.

If they aren't willing to spend the small amount it costs to distribute copies on hard drives, it tells me something. Either they don't want to pay VPFs to lower grossing locations, or they don't think the movie will perform well, or both.

And it's only going to 2800 theatres? It's more like a concerted effort to deny product to a lower tier. 35mm prints used to actual cost money so a lower VPF is still good for the distribs.

Other than big summer or Xmas films lower gross theaters would get prints already played else were . In the studios mind by the time it got to A low gross theater it cost them nothing ,now it's costing them $ 800.00 per title .
