LaPorte Lion Cinemas in danger of closing Sept. 6
Neil O’Connor, proprietor of LaPorte Lion Cinemas on Colfax Street in LaPorte, says the movie theater is set to close Sept. 6 unless some last-minute funding is secured.

O’Connor, who reopened the former Kerasotes four-screen theater in April 2012, said in a press release that while the theater received “strong community support,” he was “unable to locate local community investment in a timely manner. “

O’Connor said the property and business are “still listed for sale,” but he is “willing to consider any reasonable offers that will keep the business open in LaPorte.” He said he is “willing to help any potential new owner through the transition process.”

“As an independent operator, LaPorte Lion Cinemas was able to offer the most affordable pricing to its customers, approximately 50% less than the nearest corporate competitor,” O’Connor said in the press release. “A promotion that encouraged customers to ‘Roar’ for a dollar off their concession purchases was a huge success. More than 2,000 roars were collected!”

“The Lion and its staff sincerely thanks everyone who came to share the experience with us. It was a truly wonderful summer!”

For more information, visit the LaPorte Lion Cinemas page on Facebook.

Wildwood’s only theater for sale

Thursday, July 26, 2012 03:29 am
CHRISTIE ROTONDO

Owner hopes to keeps the movies showing

WILDWOOD- The curtains may be closing on Wildwood’s last movie theater.

The Sea Theater on Pacific Avenue, which according to owners is the last operating movie theater on the island, has been placed on the market and is ceasing its film operations for the summer.

“My hope is that the movie theater will not be closed,” Taras Penkalskyj, the theater’s owner, said. “I hope to sell it as a theater and it will continue with the same spirit we had.”

Penkalskyj and his wife, Alexandra, bought the Sea Theater 14 years ago, and now are selling it because of personal and health reasons. They are both Philadelphia natives and film enthusiasts who spend their summers in Wildwood.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Penkalskyj said his mother started his passion for the movies. One theater they would frequent, he said, was a palace style theater that was elaborately decorated.

“I looked forward to going to the theater more than seeing the movie,” he said. These memories, he said, led to his interest in films and eventual purchase of the Sea Theater.

According to Penkalskyj, the theater was built in 1916 as a nickelodeon, and is possibly one of the last nickelodeon theaters to be built in the country. Penkalskyj said that around that time, the age of nickelodeons was over, and movie palaces were being ushered into the United States. He said that the original name of the theater is no longer known.

According to Penkalskyj, the building has gone through numerous occupancies and was abandoned for years before he and his family bought it in 1998.

The theater has one screen and seats about 70 people, and Penkalskyj said it is the only single screen, independently owned theater left in New Jersey.

It took five years for the theater to be restored as “authentically as they knew how” Penkalskyj said. From the colors of the walls to the decorations and “elaborate gold décor” the theater has been decorated to pay homage to “old-fashioned showmanship” and replicate the original old-time nickelodeon.

In addition to summer blockbusters, Penkalskyj played vintage, avant-garde, and foreign films at the Sea Theater. The theater hosted silent film festivals, and showed some art films that were exclusively shown on the Theater’s screen, Penkalskyj said. Cinema Club New Jersey, a film club, also called the theater home.

“We filled a niche on the island,” Penkalskyj said. He said that visitors from Cape May, Avalon, and Stone Harbor would come to the Sea Theater to catch a foreign or silent film.

“There are plenty of people who are looking for and are starved for this cinematic flare,” Penkalskyj said. “They are looking for something they can do year round that’s a little more sophisticated.”

Penkalskyj began accepting bids for the Sea Theater in mid-July, and said there have been a few serious inquiries already made. For more information about the theater call 609-827-6357.

FEATURED, REAL ESTATE — BY THATCHER IMBODEN ON FEBRUARY 7, 2012 1:10 PM

The Suburban World Theater in Uptown Minneapolis is for sale.
Remember the sign on the outside of the theater not long ago about the Suburban World Theater being closed for renovations? Well, sources indicate that the renovation was required by the City, such as roof repairs. The property is now owned by the bank, presumably because the previous owner couldn’t make the required payments on the mortgage.
Now the Jesse Olson Group of Coldwell Banker Burnet has it listed for sale at $899,000. The listing says: “A truly unique venue. Built in classic Granada Style, with Spanish facades and original stars still illuminate from the ceiling. NOW BANK OWNED. Many Updates, including roof, electrical, plumbing and more.”
The building, located at 3022 Hennepin Avenue, has changed hands numerous times over the last 15 years or so. I remember when it was a Mann Theater, and yes, even saw Titanic there. After Mann closed, it has been a Cinema Grille and a random event house that the most recent owner operated. The interior is on the historic registry due to its Mediterranean-inspired walls and star-studded ceiling. The lighting inside is terrible for anything other than movie-watching but with the right operator, the space could be fantatic.
My dream would be for it to become an event center and concert hall like the Varsity Theater has become. Uptown could use more live music and performance, and the Suburban World Theater presents that opportunity.
