I had someone tell me: "they plan to buy the server and hardware needed to accept a digital print, take no VPF, and run it through a very nice video projector. " Is this possible?

Not that I know of. There are several proprietary boards inside the projector that allow it to decrypt the signal from the server. IMB, Enigma, and ICP boards come to mind, but I am not a tech, just a theatre owner.

There is very limited amount of product that can be projected this way -all of Sony Picture Classic films can be done this way as well as other indi companies .

Had good talk with a very respected tech and a very well known server mfg company: the consensus was that no it won't work because of all kinds of reasons that the server, the digital print, must all talk back and forth with each other and no talkie no picture. The tech did say that a computer genius could probably figure it out and good luck. However he also said they have an 8000.00 NEC video projector that is absolutely the equal of the 2 k digital projectors and it is ridiculous it can't be used to project in smaller theatres. You have to bet that in about 10 years projection booths will look as incoherent as they do with patched together 35 mm systems today but until then: ouch. so NO. Unless you're a freaking genius.

Even if you are a freaking genius or intend to play the kind of stuff Slap listed, the answer is probably still "No". I've heard of no case where anyone has busted the encryption on digital pictures. Of course, if it has been done, it'll probably be a long time before any of us hear about it... :woohoo:

Sorta the same problem you have using a Digital projector and HDMI out on a DVD and running to DVI input, it expects a return signal from the projector to tell the DVD all is cool, and aparently it's looking for conformation you arn't trying to Dub copies using HD output... I wasn't warned about this, hooked up an expensive DVD that way, and got BLANK PICTURE? company was worthless in troubleshooting issue, found it ONLINE and ended up going to an OLDER RCA DVD player with HDMI out worked fine...

Will hacks happen? you bet! BUT will the studios even book something if they don't know you HAVE the proper equipment?

Sony Pictures classics-- film district and other indi -- you can use a home theater projector-- 100 legally-- I have theaters that use it--- you get it down loaded to a mini server ( thats free) and it is then shown on a home style video projector. You must use there provider most popular is a provider out of ny . The down side is you pay 15 % to 10 % extra in terms .... so old 35 % terms are now 50 % ..
