In my booking calls this AM I was looking for a print of Dolphin Tale for a small theatre. No 35 MM available. The theatre is on a list a mile long. Then we had a quick discussion of digital. WB is taking every theatre that has digital that wants the film. "We have hard drives here. You want Dolphin Tale? We load it up and send it out." And if you want it on 35 MM you will wait and wait as the 35 mm theatres fight it out for the last remaining prints. One theatre I book for started looking for The Help 2 weeks out. It was week 6 before a 35mm print was dislodged. This is not a good position to be in. It will get harder and harder across the board to pick up prints 2 weeks out. Or at any point.

This is reason number 1 I switched my single screen over when I did back in 2009. I could feel the pressure even then. I can't imagine how tough it must be now.

Good luck to everyone still on 35MM. It's going to be a bumpy ride.....

and it actually indicates that it will be easier to get a print after two weeks than smaller theatres are used to. That's a good thing.

I wonder if this is a regional thing, Leeler. We have had very little trouble booking film to-date. Granted, there was one case last year, where a print was delayed by a week... and three such cases this year. Those were attempts to book move-overs.

Our 2012 season could be "bumpy", but there's no immediate indication that it'll be tragic.

Still... we're ready to convert if it does come to that.
