Well I can only get one. Cowboys looks great but smurfs has a hudge appeal from young to 50's.

What do you think for a family theatre??

but the smurf movie looks soooo bad. I loves me my Hank Azaria but even he looks lame in it. Probably hook the kids, though.....

So not a lot of opinions here so we went Smurfs. Wider appeal and maybe some legs. We did not get to screen them since we were at the NAC annual convention.

(This post is probably too late but...)

Smurfs as stated is definitely aimed towards the younger/family crowd and will probably bring in more $ to your theater. Some people will be going for the nostalgia factor but even that won't get me to go watch it. I was really unimpressed with the trailer, CG, the jokes, and what's-his-face,...Everything seems sub-par to the original series in my opinion.

Cowboys & Aliens is aimed at a totally different audience that includes, I would assume, the teen-and-up crowd. And with this film some of your audience may be well aware of film genre conventions (Western/Sci-fi/Disaster/etc) and how they are related and different... Anyways... without getting too detailed if I had a movie theater I would be showing Cowboys & Aliens opposed to Smurfs tonight. I'm more interested in film theory/experience than what I am in a let-down flick with the potential to score some money.

I'm going to see Cowboys & Aliens tonight at the local Drive-In. (:

Did great with Smurfs. I expected Cowboys at my country theatre to crush Smurfs but it didn't. Smurfs did twice the business there. I expect Cowboys to catch up a little during the week there.

which means you could have gone either way and done ok/ neither broke out surprising/ except me: I thought Smurfs unimpressive... but the kids wanted something that I do not think they got from Cars 2.

Follow up reply after seeing Cowboys & Aliens...

It was dissapointing and could have been better. I did enjoy seeing Harrison Ford and Paul Dano, but other than that it seemed to drag on and wasn't enough action or alien scenes to my liking. Defintly could have been done better, at its best it was meh. A 5/10.

Yes it is but it takes time to navigate. I just let my booker tell me the numbers since they watch Rentrek a lot more than I. Besides that is why I pay a booker.

Takes 3-4 clicks at most. Less than a minute. Can get the info 24 hours a day.

I get the feeling very few people are using Rentrak at all. What a shame.

As I am sitting at my desk waiting for the last movie to get out, It seemed like Planet of the Apes was a bit weak tonight. In less than 1 minute on Rentrak's site I saw that our numbers were pretty much in line (where we normally are) with the rest of the theaters in my area. How many bookers are working at 11:44 pm on a Friday? Larry? Slap? Mike? Richard?
