A woman called to complain today that a popcorn bag leaked butter all over her pants when she watched a movie. Her boys pants are also stained by the butter.

I would like to know how other theaters handle this situation.

Any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated.

Mike,

This is admittedly a tough one. Cleaning butter off of pants is tough. I'd see what the dry cleaner says and hope for the best. If it's real butter it tends to be worse to clean. Fake butter, for whatever reason, isn't as bad, but they're both tough. Are you thinking about telling her "sorry there isn't anything I can do"? If so, I wouldn't expect her or her kids will be back anytime soon. I am in a very small community and can't afford to lose lifetime customers over some spilled butter but if you're in a multiplex maybe it isn't as much of a big deal. BTW, I'd get rid of those bags if they're a probelm. They make leak proof ones, or you can always use tubs like we do and it shouldn't be a problem in the future. Good luck

Guess it kind of depends on whether you're letting them butter their popcorn themselves or not. If they're doing it and they insist on dumping a quart of goop on their corn, I'd say they're on their own.

Though we use tubs and butter the corn ourselves, we do keep a case of bags for employees & friends around. I haven't had any problem with them leaking, so I'd guess it's all in the application.

Have not had this problem yet. We use bags mostly with tubs and we top the popcorn. I would definetly take a closer look at the bags you are using.

I would offer to pay the dry cleaning bill and look into new bags. We use PCI bags. A little more but at the trade shows they will put a 1/4 inch of butter in a bag and leave it sit on a paper towel all week. No butter on the towel.

Check with your supplier to see if they carry bags from PCI ( Packaging conceptes Inc ) You can buy direct but will have to buy a lot to offset shipping or get free shipping.

This is one of the top reasons we use tubs. Never had one leak.
And tubs tip over & spill much less often.

I agree. Tubs are the way to go. Our small ones even fit in the cupholders which people really like.

Can I go back to McDonald's about the Whopper goo that fell on my shirt? Seriously: If it is a lousy bag: it is your fault. In any event: a dry cleaning credit in the form of passes would probably take care of it. And it's not "fake" butter. It's oil and we call it "hot topping". Actually I say to them "with?" or "without?" and one idiot out of 500 does not know what it means. And it beats the heck out of dealing with the smart-a** proclaiming that it's not real butter.
