The slate for ShowEast is as inspiring as a forgotten baloney sandwich. Freaking Daybreakers? That is one movie I just have to see. One that I'd travel 2000 miles to see. One that will cost me 3000.00 to see. Our conventions will have to start doing better at getting decent films if they are to attract. Sometimes it feels we'd be better off going to an indie film festival. At least the films would be earnest and seemed like someone was trying. One day at ShowEast I saw: Good Will Hunting, As Good As It gets, and Shine. I was wrung out. All 3 were nominated for best picture that year. What happened to get us where we are today? Why can ComicCon get both movies and stars and the people who show the films cannot?

Send this post to NATO since they will now be in charge and they hired Mitch to do things. I just hope not the same old same old. We need change, that is why they took over I thought.

If you want to see good films, I suggest attending the Toronto International Film Festival. You won't be disappointed, and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than ShowEast.

For the record, NATO is only taking over what used to be called ShoWest in spring 2011, and is currently being referred to as The NATO Convention. NATO is not taking over ShowEast, which remains under the ownership of Nielsen EDI. Many NATO members feel that it is a burden on the industry to support two full fledged conventions, while Nielsen EDI rakes in the dough from studios, trade show exhibitors, and theatre owners. Nielsen's main motivation is the bottom line, while the focus of the new NATO Convention in 2011 will be to promote the exhibition industry and provide more value to theatre owners.

I am not attending ShowEast for the second year in a row, and I doubt I will be going to ShoWest in 2010 either, but I guarantee you that I will be in attendance for the NATO Convention in spring 2011!

Also, it has been confirmed that ShoWest will cease to exist after 2010, when the NATO Convention begins in spring 2011. Nielsen EDI, which owns the rights to the name "ShoWest," has indicated that they will not attempt to compete with the new NATO Convention, which would have been foolish if they had tried. The name "ShoWest" is meaningless without the support of NATO, the studios, and the trade show exhibitors.

It is still possible that Nielsen could transfer their ownership of the name "ShoWest" back to NATO at some point in the future, but that is not really a critical factor to the future success of the NATO Convention.

Hey slap, am I misreading you? Did you just say you don't have any compassion for independent theatre owners?

It is not the role of NATO to get involved in disputes between independents and big chains, or between independents and the studios.

Some independents obviously have a problem with that fact. They fail to participate in any meaningful way outside of their little fiefdom, and make petty, insulting comments about NATO every chance they get. Those are the types owners who really don't deserve a strong, professional association representing their industry.

If you want an association to represent just independent operators, try forming one and see how easy it is. They don't call independents, "independent" for nothing.

I think there's an awful lot of expectations for a small organization such as NATO with...... I think I am correct: 4 employees. I hear complaints from some but wonder: what are the complainers looking for? Perhaps I'm not very disappointed because I do not expect an enormous amount beyond what I know they are doing.
