Started to take the Sandhills Drive In out of slumber mode. Put the bulbs back in the lamps and turned on the sound to see how the speakers handled the winter. Checked the radio systems and all seems to be in order. Screen in good shape except for some fencing that always seems to fall over. Thinking about going to a single feature only. Last summer after the first movie was over, I lost the bulk of my crowd and would end up showing to the wee hours to a handful of cars.
I guess in my neck of the woods people don't like to stay out to late anymore.

Congrats on a new season! We just opened up this weekend.

I know a few drive-ins run single features, but it didn't work well for us. We tried it back in '96, and found that out customers were pretty much unimpressed with the idea. Also, it seemed a waste of time, electricity and gas to open up the snack bar, only to close it back down midway through one performance. Really, we'd just gotten the grill and pizza ovens warmed up by the time it was time to start closing down. Our concessions really suffered.

Somehow though, some drive-ins seem to make it work. I'm not sure why.

Nebraska panhandle. I think there only two of us left now after Kearney's screen was hit by a tornado. My concession is very basic, only real food I offer is Hot Dogs so there is not much prep or clean up. I use to offer more selections but really cut back over the years due to many different reasons.
I usually open when school is dismissed for the summer.

Drive-ins are going to have a record-setting season this year, with the economy in the dumps people will be drawn more than ever to bargain entertainment.

So far, everything I'm seeing says you're probably right, Rick.

The only drive-ins that don't seem to be doing well are fighting the elements. Even with the rain we had this weekend, we did fairly well.

From what we've seen so far this year.... I'll agree with you guys. We're coming up on week 7 for the 2009 season, and so far numbers are better for 2009 than they were comparitively for the same time last year.
