I'm considering re-opening a single screen theatre. The former operator really has nothing to use the equipment for and nowhere to store it, but what he's asking seems high given the current environment (digital conversion reducing demand, economy, etc.) I know that in some cases projectors and lamphouses can be had for the cost of gas.

I don't mind paying something for the equipment, just for the convenience of not having to lift new equipment in.

Given the below (sorry about the formatting), does anyone who may have a more current pulse on the used equipment field have comments on the prices listed? I believe the majority of this equipment was installed no later than 1995. I'm also a little suspect of the condition of the projector, given that when I've seen film there, it's clear there is a shutter timing problem (vertical smearing).

IMHO, those prices seem to be on the high end of what a used equipment dealer would be charging. so yes, I believe your hunch is correct. 50% of that might be a good deal if you believe most of it is currently working well.

Cool. I'm glad someone else thinks what he wants was way high.

imho I would take the list and consider: do you really want what they have? Then I would make my own list and I would contact 4-5 places and ask them for a quote for similar or better equip. Compare all. Then: at least you'll know what you are paying re: apples to apples.

Yah... I was thinking pretty much what Mike just said.

A theatre supply is going to offer somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 for the whole booth. Then, they'll sell it to someone like you for $15,000+.

Like Mike said... look around. You can probably offer the guy $10,000 for the whole shebang. It's probably not worth his time to remove it and part it out.

I wouldn't get caught up in the idea there's a glut of machinery out there. There really isn't. Digital "conversions" don't make up that many of the small percentage of digital out there. In the case of Carmike, which did convert wholesale, Christie took most of those machines, to prevent exactly what you're talking about.

As for shutter ghosting... be careful about using that kind of stuff to get a discount. The fix may be as simple as twisting a knob. All too often, someone grabs the shutter knob, thinking they're focusing the picture.

Good luck, though. That booth has a decent package in it.

I finally got access to do a walkthrough. What a mess. The projection booth hasn't been cleaned in years, nor have the projector, platter system, etc. The projector is missing parts, including, for example. the knurled nuts that would normally hold the gate in place. I guess the twist-tie wrapped around the upper support stud was enough to keep the gate in place, but it probably also explains the heavy, uneven wear on the pressure pad runner, possibly also the inch thick pile of film shavings in the case. The oil is clearly contaminated and there is a suspicious ticking that I recognize as a damaged starwheel shaft, something I ran into at a previous job.

The only thing I really saw of any value was the screen (no stains, etc.) and masking. And the sound equipment.

We're going to have to do a bit more renovation than we had anticipated (Isn't that always the case?), so we may just go for broke and get new equipment.
