TOPIC: Sound systems new poll ?

Sound systems new poll ? 07 Aug 2001 22:00 #1927

I just screened "The Tailor of Panama" in the newly opened art house that I did some consulting for. They ended up choosing dolby digital. It sounded a little flat to me but the installer may have not equalized the house correctly.(their shutter was a little out of time as well I adjusted it)
Which sound system sounds best to you and why.
My choice is DTS because to me it has the clearest sound through the spectrum.
SDDS had to many dirt and syc problems for me.

For us in the Art Cinema world it is only Dolby Digital. Dolby is clearly the winner. Just the fact that Miramax chose Dolby cemented that deal years ago.

First and foremost, I have heard all three systems set up in the same reference room by the same technician using the same EQ equipment at the same time. He matched loudness and frequency response down to the quarter of a decibel. The result was that if properly set up, we couldn't tell the difference just by listening to any of them.

The factors that affect the way a room sounds are first and foremost room acoustics. Secondly the choice of speakers has almost as much to do with the room will sound, as do the room acoustics. Thirdly, how you power the speakers will have a large effect on the sound. Once you have those things down, then the final EQ is like the icing on the cake. It makes the cake nicer but if the cake is dry or crumply it is still lousy cake. If the cake is moist and fluffy then it is nice cake. You must take care of the fundamentals before you can get good sound.

Hiring an acoustician to help you set up the room is a good idea. Buying good speakers is a must. Aim them in the correct direction; I know this sound silly but it has more effect than the final EQ. Don't scrimp on the amplifiers. Then when the tech does the EQ make him listen to the Jiffy test film and perhaps a trailer you really like the sound of. Don't let him button up his kit until you are satisfied with the end result.

Trust me, I can take the best speakers, amplifiers and digital film and make them sound like crap in a poor room. I can also make mono film sound rich and full in a room that sounds good.

The Projector head poll is all I get, too. Nothing is showing up about sound systems.
