Late in the winter we had 2 things we could do: add a new screen or add Zippy's. After getting screwed around by code office we went with Zippy's: a sit down/ outside dining/ take out food trailer. We went with Zippy's.

Really started work about mid Mat wrecking and cleaning and plans kept expanding. It is in the parking lot which is adjacent to the Temple Theatre so we are cross promoting like mad: punch 8 and get a free movie or Zippy meal... etc. Built concrete piers/ planter to attach white picket fence/ got them planted early with Morning Glory, etc. Zippy's had 3 fryolators/ flat grill/ char grill with a dog and burger menu but with salads/ chili/ and the suprise hit: chicken quesidilla (spell that right Mike>?) ice cream and frys and onion rings: very original and edgy: not!

We opened June 28th and had a line waiting on the first day from 11-3 with no sign or advertising. We're learning and just finished our first 4 days: in a blur.

Food service makes the movies seem easy!

Sounds cool Mike.
Good Luck
Do you have a picture? I'm having a hard time visualizing your "trailer" restaurant.
This doesn't make you "trailer trash" does it???

We owned and operated a restaurant next door to our theatre for 7 years. It is DEFINITELY more work than a theatre, but it was fun - except for the fact that it never really turned a profit. We sold it about a year ago.

The biggest issue we had as not being able to be in both places at once. In my opinion both places suffered because of our time and energies being split. IF the restaurant is successful, it can be a good leveler, cash-flow wise, during the spring and fall "drought" of good movies.

I do miss it, though.

We added a 20 foot concessions trailer to our drive-in 2 years ago as an auxillary overflow cocnession stand. At the "Stardust Express" Concessions Trailer we only sell the "quick" grab-n-go items (Fountain drinks, popcorn, bottled water, candy, cotton candy, pretzels, ice cream, nachos and sno-cones) while it's at the theatre. Since we had to get a full separate Tennessee Health Department License for the trailer - we can (and do) take it "off-site" for street fairs, carnivals, jazz festivals, parades, car shows, etc. When we take it off-site, we also sell hot dogs and flame broiled burgers, in addition to the items we sell while it's at the theatre.

The hardest part we have taking the trailer "off-site" is finding enough available electricty to run the thing.

We worked the local "Mile Long Yard Sale" back in April with the trailer and brought in almost $2,900 for the day. Sold the first 3 pots of coffe before 6 a.m. (Yard sale people are nuts!)

Here's a photo of ours...

Zippy's is kicking butt and we are just starting doing our cross promotions.
