We're trying to figure out what to open in time for the big holiday weekend. What do all of you think would be the movie to chose between WALL-E and Hancock? On the one hand, Pixar is usually a big favorite among kids and families. But on the other hand, Will Smith is usually a good box office draw during the holidays. Tough decisions.

Wall*E is my vote. We will do much better with G-rated Pixar then the PG-13 drinkin' cussin' Hancock. But that's us here in the stix....

Rumor is Hancock is barely PG-13, and was almost an R. Will Smith is huge on July 4, but you can't go wrong with Pixar.

Being that we're only a single screen, we can only open one of those films. And especially since Disney does their aggregated percentages, it doesn't really seem worth it to pick up one of their movies several weeks after it opens and still pay the same percentage as the theaters in their 1st week of showing the film (unless of course we feel that there will be enough of a turn out to justify the extra expense).

I think WALL-E will end up in the $275 to $300 Million range nationally. It won't open super spectacularly as its going to take some word of mouth but I think it will have terrific "legs". (It is going to take sometime for the traditional Pixar audience to adapt to the silent movie Charlie Chaplinish begining and the 1984ish totalitarian society outerspace sequences where Eve discovers her independence but once they do it will be hailed as a classic. Call this the Ratatouille syndrome if you will.)

I see Hancock doing about 150 Million nationally (think I Robot). It just doesn't look all that good. And for all the talk of Will Smith "owning" 4th of July weekend, I think Hancock will - to a certain extent- suffer the Caspian fate. It will be crushed between WALL-E and Dark Night - which I see as the other major (and last) tentpole of the summer season.

I attended a screening of Wall-e and loved it. I think it might be a little deep/dark/slow for kids (The opening scenes reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey), but for that reason I think it was more enjoyable than most Pixar movies (being an adult).

My vote is Wall-e.

Last week we decided to run Wall-E. Called Disney and set it up. Just got a phone call from Disney and they are pulling Wall-E from all theaters that only run week-ends.
