I went to see a movie tonight with my daughters out of town (since we no longer have a cinema). The movie we saw was Kong Fu Panda. While watching the movie I noticed there was these scratches that appeared horizontally across the picture. They weren't straight scratches but they had a curve to them. Is this caused from the platter in some way?

I have seen it before in the past and I couldn't remember if I had ever had this problem myself when I ran a theater.

Was it maybe dirt on the print?

hmmm. Did they flash all over or where they consistently in the same spot, like the same specific horizontal lines?

I wonder if it could have occurred during make up or break down, while something small and sharp like a piece of plastic could have scratched it along the way? Although that would have made them VERTICAL, wouldn't it?

The more I think about it, the more I don't know how it would have happened that they be horizontal scratches. I'm sure some 16-year old projectionist has found a way to do it though!!

Most likely culprit? Curved screen...

I've talked to my tech about curved scratches that are about one third across the frame on the non-soundtrack side. He said they are due to the film going over the edge of a roller diagonally. Somehow the roller gets slantwise and the film goes right over the top and the edge of the roller scratches it. Makes sense, I guess.

It looks like it could be something to do with the platter or the rollers. These scratches were consistant throughout the whole movie. I don't believe it was dirt. The scratches did appear coming out of the RH side of the picture on the screen. I want to say they were horizontal but did have a curve upward.

I remember seeing these before back when I use to run our cinema on a print that came in this way. The rollers could be a good explanation but I had also wondered if they could have got this way from the film going over the edge of the platter during make-up.

???

sounds like it was going over a platter edge one way or the other. Was it green?

Couldn't tell if it was green or not. The scratches were like the size of a hair on the screen.
