THE COMING SOON LIST for our theatre
AS OF JULY 21, 2001

LOST AND DELIRIOUS JULY 27, 2001
Set in a Canadian boarding school, this coming-of-age tale is the powerful love story of two unforgettable teenaged girls (Piper Perabo, Jessica Paré) who discover sexual passion, and a love so deep it leads to a tragic event no one could have anticipated. Caught in the middle is their best friend Mouse (Mischa Barton), confused by the depth of the relationship between her friends and torn by her loyalty to each of them. Based on Susan Swan's novel The Wives of Bath.

THE CIRCLE AUGUST 3, 2001
In a hospital waiting room, a woman learns that her daughter, Solmaz, has just given birth. The ultrasound test had prepared the family for a boy. The baby–it turns out–is a girl. The joy the mother anticipated turns to terror for she knows her son-in-law’s family will abandon her daughter. The old woman flees as the in-laws arrive.
On the crowded streets of Tehran–a place where women are not permitted to stay out on their own–two women are also on the run. Arezou and Nargess have been granted temporary leave from prison, but have no plans to return. They have scrounged enough money for the bus trip to Nargess’s hometown, but she lacks proper identification, and the police are searching everyone at the station.
Meanwhile, their friend Pari has escaped from prison to have an abortion. Unmarried and threatened with death by her brothers, Pari flees from her father’s house to meet former inmate Elham who is now married to a doctor. Despite her connections, Elham is unable to help Pari in her hour of need.
Despondent, Pari wanders the streets and chances upon single mother Nayereh, about to abandon her young daughter. Pari tries to stop her, but it is too late. Soon after, Nayareh, falsely accused of prostitution, is taken into custody by the police.
As director Jafar Panahi’s narrative shifts dynamically from woman to woman, their stories culminate with tremendous potency, transforming a shared sense of despair and injustice into one of kinship and even hope.
With only two previous films to his credit (The White Balloon, The Mirror), Jafar Panahi has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most promising new filmmakers.

THE PRINCESS AND THE WARRIOR AUGUST 3, 2001
The sad and angry Bodo (Benno Fürmann), a small time criminal who is always running, from himself as well as the law, and Sissi (Franka Potente), a shy, quiet nurse who works in a psychiatric clinic, meet for the first time after a horrible accident. Bodo saves Sissi's life, which is literally hanging by a thread, then disappears without trace. Obsessed by the incident, Sissi sets out on a mission to find the mysterious stranger, and to discover whether their paths crossed through simple blind chance or the intricate mechanisms of destiny itself. A new romantic thriller from the director (Tom Tykwer) and star (Potente) of Run Lola Run.

DIVIDED WE FALL AUGUST 8, 2001
Set in a Czech town during the German occupation of World War II, this farcical, darkly humorous film tells the story of a young, childless couple who yearns for a baby of their own. By chance one day they come across a young Jewish man and offer him refuge in their home. From that moment on, they begin a dramatic fight for survival. To divert the attention of the German authorities, and protect their neighbors from the danger of reprisals, the couple becomes more and more
entangled with the representatives of arbitrary rule. Based on a true story, Divided We Fall intermingles decent people and traitors, heroism and collaboration, generosity and cowardice. An Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film!

JIN-ROH: THE WOLF BRIGADE AUGUST 10, 2001
Dark and violent, with a terrific urban noir look, the animated Jin-Roh pits police and shadowy military intelligence forces against subversives and terrorists in an alternative-history postwar Tokyo. Secret policeman Fusé fails to stop a girl suicide bomber from blowing up herself and others. Sent for retraining, he meets the bomber's sister, who challenges his unquestioning loyalty to the state. She introduces him to the Little Red Riding Hood story, but the more he befriends the girl, the more he identifies with the wolf. Written by Mamoru Oshii, acclaimed director of Ghost in the Shell.

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH AUGUST 17, 2001
Adapted from John Cameron Mitchell's critically acclaimed off-Broadway rock theatre hit, this dazzling film tells the story of Hedwig, an "internationally ignored" rock and roll songstress hailing from Communist East Germany. Born a boy named Hansel, whose life dream is to find his other half, he submits to a sex change operation in order to marry an American GI and get over the Wall to freedom. The operation is botched, leaving her with the aforementioned 'angry inch.' Through a collage of songs, flashbacks and animation, a bitter yet witty Hedwig tells her life story...

GREENFINGERS AUGUST 17, 2001
The beauty and delicacy of a flower seem a sharp contrast to the rough exterior of a prison inmate. Yet these two images become inseparable in this funny and touching story of redemption, inspired by the real-life gardening exploits of British prisoners. Sometimes, beauty is found in the most unlikely of places. Clive Owen (Croupier), Helen Mirren (Prime Suspect), David Kelly (Waking Ned Devine) and Natasha Little star.

BREAD AND TULIPS AUGUST 24, 2001
The subversive romantic comedy Bread and Tulips should require a warning label: "Beware. You are in danger of losing your heart." This deceptively simple, lyrically poetic, slyly funny tale’s premise is that love could be just around the corner; you just have to look for it, if you dare. Director Silvio Soldini is not at all ashamed to wear his heart on his sleeve, as he traces a married woman’s hesitant first steps from a complacent nuptial bed to a giddy and lighthearted freedom she had never experienced and hardly even knew existed. Winner of 9 David Di Donatello Italian Academy Awards!

DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN AUGUST 24, 2001
The musicians behind the Soggy Bottom Boys, which is the name of the fictional bluegrass band in the Coen brothers's movie O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?, are featured in this documentary, which centers on a bluegrass concert in Nashville, Tennessee given by the bands that contributed to O BROTHER's soundtrack, and provides a brief history of folk and bluegrass music.

VERTICLE RAY OF THE SUN SEPTEMBER 7, 2001
On the anniversary of their mother's death, three sisters who live close to each other in present-day Hanoi meet at a café to pray, prepare the memorial meal and greet relatives. They are playful, share laughter and seek one another's advice on every subject, even the most intimate. Yet, each one of them has a secret. At the end of the day, while reminiscing about their mother, the sisters bring up the subject of a mysterious man who seems to have been part of their mother's past. It
has cast a shadow on the idealized image they have of their parents as an indestructible couple, while affecting each one of them in their own relationships. From Tran Anh Hung, director of The Scent of Green Papaya.

JACKPOT SEPTEMBER 21, 2001
Jackpot is the story of an aspiring country singer (Jon Gries) who abandons his wife (Daryl Hannah) to set off with his manager (Garrett Morris) on a 9-month tour. The two men are searching for their own piece of the American Dream, but find themselves in karaoke bars as they make their way through a series of bleak western towns in search of an audience. Supporting cast includes Mac Davis, Peggy Lipton, Anthony Edwards and Adam Baldwin. From Michael Polish, director of the highly acclaimed feature Twin Falls Idaho.

BULLY UNDATED
Larry Clark, the controversial director of Kids, returns with another shocker -- this one based on the true story of a reviled high school bully who was viciously murdered by a gang of well-to-do (and sexually promiscuous) teenagers. The film chronicles the events that would turn friends into mortal enemies and casual acquaintances into co-defendants to a brutal crime for which they never repented. Ensemble cast includes Brad Renfro, Rachel Miner, Nick Stahl and Bijou Phillips.

ALL OVER THE GUY UNDATED
Eli (Dan Bucatinsky) is memorializing the end of a relationship as he has done all his others: with a visit to the STD clinic for an AIDS test. Tom (Richard Ruccolo) has recently become sober and faithfully attends an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Separately, they tell the story of their broken love affair that began with a chance meeting between their two respective best friends, Brett (Adam Goldberg) and Jackie (Sasha Alexander), who are about to be married, which means Eli and Tom have to find a way to deal with each other, since they are The Best Man and The Man of Honor, respectively.

THE DEEP END UNDATED
The Deep End delves into the psychology of deception and pushes the limits of classic film noir into a new and provocative landscape. Tilda Swinton (Orlando, Female Perversions) stars as a mother who covers up a murder in order to protect her gay teenage son from being implicated. But someone knows. Information is worth money and the price of silence is even higher. Each decision she makes to hide the evidence ironically adds another life-threatening twist to this terrifying game of cat and mouse. From Scott McGehee & David Siegel, award-winning creators of Suture.

EVERYBODY’S FAMOUS UNDATED
Everybody's Famous! is an original and hilarious comedy about how far some people are willing to go for fame. Jean is a family man and factory worker who dreams of becoming a songwriter. Pinning his hopes on his teenage daughter Marva, he takes her to singing contests in which the awkward and overweight girl struggles to belt out a tune. Then Jean is suddenly fired because of cut backs, and he becomes even more desperate to have his daughter succeed. After a chance meeting, Jean kidnaps the most famous pop star in the country and holds her hostage, demanding to be heard by
the music industry. An Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.

THE CLOSET UNDATED
The Closet is the hilarious story of how one little rumor not only brightens a simple man's life, but also becomes the awakening of everyone around him. Francois (Daniel Auteuil) is so utterly boring he's abandoned by his wife and son and is about to lose his job. Desperate to stay employed, Francois devises an outrageous scheme: He will come out of a closet he never went into, and start a rumor that will have the entire corporation thinking he's gay. Now, Francois is entrenched in a comedy of errors where he must pretend to live an exciting gay life in order to keep his job. Gérard Depardieu and Thierry Lhermitte (The Dinner Game) co-star in this new comedy from Francis Veber, author of La
Cage aux Folles.

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL – REISSUE UNDATED
It's Square Pegs at the Round Table as England's zaniest humorists take on the Middle Ages and convert Arthurian legend into uncontrollable lunacy! Written and performed by all your favorites -- Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin -- Holy Grail is being presented uncut for the first time, with 24 seconds (!) of footage removed just before its original theatrical release, back in the medieval '70s. Plus the soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby stereo! What more can we say, except "Ni!"

I already have the poster for THE PRINCESS AND THE WARRIOR. RUN LOLA RUN was such a great film and to have the director and leading lady back again bodes well for this film.

Also, people have been asking me if we are going to get HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH for about three months now. I am not sure if we will, but there are many out there who hope we do.

Last of all, the re-issue of MONTY PYTHON & THE HOLY GRAIL should be cause for excitement. A whole generation has grown up without seeing this on the big screen. With this summer's ho-hum box office, this could be one to watch.

RAW DEAL: A QUESTION OF CONSENT SEPTEMBER 14, 2001
On Friday, February 26, 1999, Delta Chi frat brothers at the University of Florida held a party at
their fraternity house and hired exotic dancer Lisa Gier King to perform. The following morning,
a half-naked and distraught King ran from the house, claiming that Michael Yarhaus had raped
her. Her most startling allegation was that frat brother Tony Marzullo had videotaped the crime.
Two days later, King herself was arrested for filing a false police report after authorities claimed
the tape showed "clearly willing and consensual sex." The community was stunned by King's arrest after it was discovered that the videotape showed Marzullo himself repeatedly addressing the camera to gleefully describe that what he was witnessing was a rape. Under pressure from the
media and Campus NOW to charge the frat brothers with rape, State Attorney Rod Smith arrogantly responded by making the tape available to the public so people could "make up their
own minds."
