I think this is a good time for little small town theaters competing with the bigger chains.
Because of the rising costs of everything and high price of gas. People are going to stay closer to home.
This is the time to spruce up your theater and bend over backwards so when things do level out they may stay and continue patronizing your theater.
So offer some specials and spruce up the place and get ready to kiss some a**!

The weird thing I read recently was that the 3 things people were cutting back on: 1. travel, 2. large purchases, 3. movies (wtf?) How about driving? How about a 3rd car?

People are definitely going to be more selective about pluncking down their hard earned dollars regardless of what theatre they attend. Recycled TV shows (Get Smart, Speed Racer, Incredible Hulk, Sex and the City, X-Files) and lame, unnecessary sequels (Mummy, Hellboy) are just not going to cut it right now.

I would have to agree with that. People will be a little more selective with their movie choices. However, movies traditionally do ok in this kind of economy. People may cut back on trips and big purchases and hang closer to home. Movies are still a somewhat affordable "out of home" activity. Who knows, maybe subruns will do more business???

Well you can rule out any relief at the pump.

Continuing its policy of bailing out the banks and favoring wall street over main street, the Fed today voted once again to lower interest rates - this time to 2%. Each time that the Fed lowers interest rates it serves to depress the value of the dollar which in turn drives up commodity prices (especially food and oil) which are measured in dollars.

Chairman Ben Bernake apparently has no concerns about the inflationary plague he is unleashing and the long term devistating effects it brings.
