It's all a matter of perspective. I've lived in metro areas like Detroit, MI, Jacksonville, FL and Fort Worth, TX, but I'm from a rural small town. For me any place with a population greater than about 40 or 50 thousand starts to seem awfully repititious. How many gas stations, fast food restaurants, strip malls, supermarkets, etc. do you really need? Of course it takes a lot to support a large population, but for me personally it doesn't take many.
I grew up in towns that had populations of 200-300 folks. We could drive to bigger towns or cities whenever we needed to. Seemed natural to me.
I would never laugh at a small town opportunity. I'd quietly run the numbers and see if there is something good where others are not looking. If not, then just keep looking.
