You may have noticed a spam or two that get on the boards. We do clean these up as they come in, we do not generally patrol the boards over the weekend (especially if we are in NYC on vacation) and Monday mornings with film bookings is a busy time for us....but we do get to them.....A few have suggested that we have a different registration process and where now it is very simple it would be a bit more complex. What do you think? Also: what do you think about real names instead of handles/user names/ etc? The main question is can you stand change?

I vote for changes. I would love to be able to update some things on my account such as my e-mail address.

What does everyone else think?

I prefer using handles/user names as some people don't want to use their real names. And besides if someone wanted to use their real name for their handle, then they could do so.

In my time on this board, I've only come across very few spams, so I think the way things are going on this board are fine for the time being. I think if the board ever gets to the point where spam invades the boards on the daily basis, then you might want to consider doing something different.

Mike and Denis, You guys are doing a great job on this forum. The weekend spam was a little irritating, but I figured it would be handled when it was discovered. Hope you had a nice vacation!!

I think using our full names, instead of user names, might be a mistake. From time to time, some of us say things that we might not want the CEO of a major studio to associate with us by name or location. I have even thought about changing mine to something less identifying.

If this system works like I remember, then perhaps a delayed registration would work. If a spammer can't post immediately, then maybe the board wouldn't seem so vulnerable.

It would force you to authorize every new user... you'd have to decide if you wanted to put in that kind of time.

I haven't had a problem with the handles. Eventually, we seem to figure out who each other is!

I also vote for keeping handles.

Delayed posting would be simple fix to prevent most spammers.

One thing for sure is that we will update the forums and acct methods soon. It is the same one we started with in 99! Back in the day! Old school! It would help a lot with srchives/ contacts/etc. I agree with the handles. I want to badmouth BV without them calling me up at home.

Yes keep the handles. We are being watched, that's for sure!

I vote for keeping handles.

Here's what I'd like to see:
-New registration that requires approval or maybe one more moderator that can keep an eye on the forum over the weekend.
-Being able to stay logged in and not having to always sign in (like Film-Tech).
-Merging the Sidewalk and The Lobby, as similar topics go in each.
-Creating a real estate forum for Theatres For Sale, Lease questions, etc.
-Moving the policies on the forum listing page to another page and providing a link.

That's about it:P

What about adding one of those image codes that requires the registrant to type in case-sensitive?

That might deter some too.

That's a pretty good idea, Andrew... but I don't think this software has that feature... even the more recent versions.

I just opened a forum called Eleven Magazine.

It uses a free forum version called phpBB and it is excellent, probably even better than what they use for Film-Tech (it allows avatars, or you can block them, etc.).

The case-sensitive thing is also available on that board.

Hey Mike,
There's still one of those posts in Cinema Design.

phpBB is a very popular widely used forum program. And it is open source and free.
I installed it for my mom's church last year.

And another good one also free.
